How do the common practices of your culture affected your personal development?

Culture is an extremely important context for human development, it affects my personal

development by what we learn from our parents. It includes ideas about what is right and wrong,
what to strive for, how to speak, what is valued, from what to eat because we Muslim we don't
eat pork is prohibited in our religion and it’s a part of our culture, as well as what kinds of
emotions are called for in certain situations. Culture teaches me how to live in a society and it
allows me to adapt the environment. However, our culture greatly contributes to the
development of our personality, beliefs, and values.

What are the practices of your culture that you don’t prefer to follow? Why?

Having 3 wives, because for me, one of the most important ideologies to me is “loyalty”. I believe
that any successful relationship, whether it be business, love or friendship involves loyalty. You
could have 3 or more wives in and out of your life, but to have only one genuinely loyal wife is
worth so much more. I have this moral being stick to one, and loyalty come in many forms but for
me, it means giving someone your consistent love and support no matter what. It means not
running away when times get hard, keeping your promises and going through both the highs and
lows of life, together.

What are the identity struggles that you experience in having your culture? Why?

The consistence of faith, because as a Muslim it’s obligatory for us to pray five (5) times a day,
and there is always a certain time I tend to forgot to pray because of tiredness and laziness. But,
I’m working hard on it and strive to practice it daily, we are just human, we commit sins, we are
not perfect, we have limitations, but there is always a process to become a good servant and it’s
that strengthen your faith by practicing the obligatory which is pray 5 times a day and always be
How does your culture differ from others?

Honestly speaking, I don’t know what is the differ of our culture from others, but I have the idea
and I’m not sure on it if it differs from other cultures. We Muslim we do fast in every month of
Ramadhan continuously in thirty (30) days, we eat first at around 2am-4am for preparation of our
fasting we call it Sahul, until the Maghrib we will Buka or break our fasting 6:00pm. Fasting it’s not
just about not eating a food or drinking a water, it is about practicing on how are we going to hold
ourselves from committing sins and strengthen our faith to ALLAH.

Describe the differences between Real Self and Ideal self?

The Real Self is who we actually are, qualities that we actually possess while the Ideal Self it’s
characteristics and qualities we’d like to have, we think we want to be, that we strive to be
and that we feel we are expected to be.

Explain the four aspects influencing one’s self esteem?

THE REACTIONS OF OTHERS- for example, when you praise, lift up, put down or hurt
someone, they will react to your behavior, which in turn it will determine how they act. It will
affect everyone near to you. Every thing that you do whether is it good or bad will become a
reflection of your original behavior that will boost your self-esteem or affect your confidence.
But no matter how much you try, you will never get rid yourself of your imperfections.
Consequently, you must learn to accept and endure the reaction of others.

COMPARISON WITH OTHERS- the more we are similar to another person in some way, the
more we tend to compare ourselves to that person. What I have learned comparing myself
to other people, I was actually doing two things, trying to figure out how good I actually was,
and trying to make myself better. I believe if we are comparing ourselves in terms of social
skills, talents, and abilities for self enhancement, then this kind of act is toxic and very
confusing, but if we compare ourselves for self-assessments then this would very helpful for
us in a long way.

SOCIAL ROLES- social roles will influence self-esteem of a certain people why? it is simply
because of the roles that you have. e.g. if you are a doctor then you should have a lot of
confidence because that it was supposed to be when you are a doctor, you are going to
interact people and doing some surgery, with out self-esteem or confidence greater chances
the operation would be fail, and also other people looked up to you, praised you, respected
you greater chances it will boost your self-esteem and confidence, meanwhile if you are a
garbage collector you have lower self-esteem why? because of your role in society, you tend
to hear what other people say like he’s just an garbage collector and that is how social roles
influenced one’s self esteem.

IDENTIFICATION- identification can influence one’s self-esteem how? Basically, it will depend
on your identification or position in a job or even in a group. E.g. if you are a president inside
the classroom so it’s your responsibility to remind your classmate and how are they going to
act on a situation, for in able to you become a president in your classroom the first and most
important thing is you have the confidence to speak in front of your classmates it influenced
you on how you will handle your fellow classmates, but if your identification inside the
classroom is just an ordinary student who only knows to sleep and not paying attention
greater chances you have lower self-esteem because simply you don't have the interests to
listen what more to improve yourself and confident as well.

MODULE 7: THE SELF IN WESTERN AND EASTERN THOUGHTS

Individualistic vs Collective Self
ACTIVITY: TWO SIDES OF THE SAME PLANET (Essay)
Instructions: List down 5 differences between Western and Eastern thoughts and culture in the table
below. And answer the following questions. (Points will be based on given rubrics)

WESTERN EASTERN

INDIVIDUALISTIC SOCIETY COLLECTIVIST SOCIETY

ME CULTURES WE CULTURES
NUCLEAR FAMILY EXTENDED FAMILY

PERSONAL GOALS GROUP GOALS

FOCUS ON THE SELF FOCUS IN A LARGER SCALE

Is the Philippines really a collectivist society? Why? Give examples and it true, how does this shape
our idea of self?

Philippines is a collectivist society because base on what I have experience with my brothers
who have already married but still living in our parent’s house, not because they can’t afford a house
but it’s showed the love and affection that they can’t easily get rid of with our parents. Even my
cousin before way back 2015 she stayed with us for 4 years to finish her education. In that case not
only my siblings, my mother and father are inside the house but even our cousins and relative
because I believe Filipino put family first at the top of their priorities we than anything else,
sometimes we sacrifice even our own happiness. The most common family here in the Philippines is
nuclear family where the member of family consists with different acquaintance such relatives,
cousins, grandmother, grandfather and etc.

If you are to choose between individualistic and collectivist society? Which do you prefer and why?

I prefer collectivist society because I want my future children to honor their parents and
elders, self discipline, politeness, and obedience. Promoting selflessness and putting community need
ahead of individual needs and working a group and supporting others is important for me, it will
encourage to what’s the best for society not just personal goals but also for the community. The
beauty of collectivist is that the group grows and benefits of the individual’s sacrifice
