TESTS FOR SKILL – RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS
A. AGILITY
ILLINOIS AGILITY TEST

The Illinois Agility Run Test is a popular fitness assessment used to evaluate an
individual's agility and speed. It measures how quickly a person can change direction
and accelerate while navigating through a predefined course. The test typically involves
sprinting, shuffling, and side-stepping around cones or markers arranged in a specific
pattern.

Objectives: To assess and improve agility by quickly maneuvering through a set course
of cones or markers in a predetermined pattern, emphasizing rapid changes in direction,
speed, and coordination.

Material needed: Flat surface, cones, stopwatch, and exercise mats.

Procedure of the Test

1. The student warms up for 10 minutes
2. The student lies face down on the floor at the “Start” cone
3. The assistant gives the command by blowing the whistle and starts the stopwatch.
4. The athlete jumps to their feet and negotiates the course around the cones
following the black line route as shown in the diagram to the finish
5. The assistant stops the stopwatch and records the time when the athlete passes
the “Finish” cone

Scoring: The shortest possible time measured in terms of seconds.

B. BALANCE
STORK BALANCE TEST

The Stork Balance Test is a simple yet effective exercise used to

assess an individual's balance and stability. It involves standing on one leg
for a specific duration of time while maintaining proper posture and
stability.

Objectives: To assess the ability to balance on the ball of the dominant

foot.

Material needed: Flat surface and stopwatch.

Procedure of the Test

1. Place the hands on the hips, then position the non-supporting foot against the
inside knee of the supporting leg.
2. The subject raises the heel to balance on the ball of the foot.
3. The stopwatch is started as the heel is raised from the floor. The stopwatch is
stopped if any of the follow occur:
• The hand(s) come off the hips
• The supporting foot swivels or moves (hops) in any direction
• The non-supporting foot loses contact with the knee.
• The heel of the supporting foot touches the floor.

Scoring: The time in seconds is recorded. The score is the best of three attempts.

C. COORDINATION
BALL JUGGLING TEST

The ball juggling test is an exercise or skill assessment that involves

juggling one or more balls in the air using hand-eye coordination and
dexterity.

Objectives: To evaluate and enhance coordination skills by continuously

manipulating a ball or balls with various body parts, focusing on precise
movements, timing, and control to maintain continuous juggling rhythm.

Material needed: Tennis ball and stopwatch

1. Stand comfortable in an area with no obstruction
2. Throw the ball into the air with the right hand. Catch it with the left hand.
3. Repeat the task. This time throw the ball upward with the left hand and catch it
with the right hand.
4. The height of the ball being tossed should be at least above the head.
5. Stop the test if the ball drops or after two (2) minutes.

Scoring: By counting the number of successful consecutive touches or juggles

performed without dropping the ball.

D. REACTION TIME
RULER DROP TEST

This test uses the known properties of gravity to

determine how long it takes a person to respond to the
dropping of an object by measuring how far the object can
falls before being caught.

Objective: To assess and improve reaction time by measuring

the time it takes for an individual to catch a ruler dropped
unexpectedly from a specified height, thereby gauging their
ability to react quickly to visual stimuli.

Material needed: Ruler, chair, and table

Procedure of the Test

1. The ruler is held by the assistant between the outstretched index finger and thumb
of the student's dominant hand so that the top of the student's thumb is level with
the zero-centimeter line on the ruler.
2. The assistant instructs the student to catch the ruler as soon as possible after it has
been released.
3. The assistant releases the ruler, and the student catches the ruler between their
index finger and thumb as quickly as possible.
4. The assistant is to record the distance between the bottom of the ruler and the
top of the student's thumb where the ruler has been caught.
5. The test is repeated two times, and the average value used in the assessment

Scoring: Measuring the distance the ruler falls before the participant catches it.

E. POWER
VERTICAL JUMP TEST

The vertical jump test is a common assessment tool used to measure explosive
power, a skill-related fitness component. It evaluates an individual's ability to vertically
displace their body off the ground from a standing position.

Objective: To monitor the development of the athlete's elastic leg strength.

Material needed: Wall, tape measure/meter stick, step ladder, and chalk.

Procedure of the Test

1. The student chalks the end of their fingertips.
2. The student stands side, 6-inches away onto the wall,
keeping both feet remaining on the ground, reaches up
as high as possible with one hand and marks the wall with
the tips of the fingers.
3. From a static position, the student jumps as high as
possible and marks the wall with the chalk on his fingers.
4. The assistant measures and records the distance
between mark 1 and mark 2.
5. The student repeats the test 2 times.
6. The assistant calculates the average of the recorded
distances and uses this value to assess the student's
performance.
Scoring: Typically based on the height reached by the
individual during the jump.

E. SPEED
40-METER SPRINT TEST

The 40-meter sprint test is a commonly used assessment to evaluate an individual's

speed, a skill-related fitness component. In this test, participants sprint a distance of 40
meters (approximately 131 feet) from a starting point to a finish line as quickly as possible.

Objective: To determine the acceleration and speed.

Material needed: 40-meter yard, stopwatch, and cones.

Procedure of the Test

1. The assistant marks a 40-meter straight section with cones on the track.
2. The assistant gives the command by blowing the whistle, serving as the 'GO'
signal, and starts the stopwatch.
3. The student will sprint the 40 meters as fast as possible.
4. The assistant stops the stopwatch when the student's torso crosses the finishing
line and records the time.

Scoring: The shortest possible time measured in terms of seconds.
