4. Note whether or not there is any point where all three terms,
pressure, elevation and velocity are known.
5. Note whether or not there is any point where there is only one
unknown quantity.
Example 3:
A siphon consisting of a pipe of 15cm diameter is used to
empty kerosene oil (RD = 0.80) from a tank A. The siphon
discharges to the atmosphere at an elevation of 1.00m. The
oil surface in the tank is at an elevation of 4.00m. The
centerline of the siphon pipe at its highest point C is at an
elevation of 5.50m. Estimate (i) the discharge in the pipe, (ii)
pressure at point C. The losses in the pipe can be assumed
to be 0.5m up to the summit and 1.2m from the summit to
the outlet.
Cavitation
With increasing velocity or potential head, pressure within
flowing fluid drops.
If at any point the local velocity is so high that pressure in a
liquid is reduced to its vapor pressure, the liquid will then
vaporize (or boil) at that point and bubbles of vapor will
form.
This vaporization or formation of vapor cavities is called
cavitation.
