When I Teach, What Should I Do?

Teaching is a very underrated profession in Philippine society. Most of the

citizens underestimate their field of discipline without knowing their importance in

molding our country’s growth and development. However, teachers are not just those

that we see in schools; they are also the ones that teach us meaningful and insightful

lessons. That being said, people should teach in accordance with the goodness that it

will provide to their learners.

Plato is known for his idealism and contributions in the body of knowledge as a

teacher. One of his contributions is essentialism, which is an educational theory that

emphasizes the notion that ideas and skills that are part of the learners’ culture should

be instilled to them and should be part of their education system (Merriam Webster,

n.d.). This theory suggests that teachers should teach the learners’ culture and tradition

for them to build their nationalism and patriotism. Subsequently, perennialism suggests

that teachers should center their method of instruction in delivering information that is

relevant and important for a long period of time (Educational Philosophies, 2015).

Furthermore, progressivism is one of the educational philosophies that gained

popularity over the years. It is focused on the exploration of students and achieving

experience (Edupedia, 2018) from the four corners of their classroom. In view of this, it

is the notion that “individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one’s

education” (Foundations of Education, n.d.). Most of the trends in the education system

are the incorporation of technologies, soft-skills training, and student-centered

instructions. A lot of curriculums are focused on teaching students to be independent in

their own skills and learning.

In conclusion, there are different teaching methods that instructors may

incorporate in their professions to fulfill their duties and obligations. Essentialism,

perennialism, and progressivism are some of the educational theories and philosophies

that have established ideas in the education industry. These are some of the methods

of instructions that could be employed by teachers to strengthen their abilities and

skills. Overall, teaching should be a passion and an instrument to change.
