INTRODUCTION:-
The nursing clinic or patient presentation utilizes the presence of a selected patient as its focus for group
discussion. It affords a direct experience in the discussion of principles and practices of nursing care relative to
a given patient. The purpose is the improvement of nursing care. Students have the opportunity to sharpen their
observation and interviewing skills while simultaneously developing increased ability to see relationships
between the patient's concept of his health and nursing problems and his resources for coping with the total
problem and the nurse's concept of the patient's problem and how it might be solved.

PURPOSE OF NURSING CLINIC:-

1. To apply theory into actual practice by observing inter-viewing and studying a patient.
2. To apply knowledge and experience to the real life situation.
3. To understand certain types of apparatus.
4. To improve the nursing care.

SIZE OF NURSING CLINIC:- Small size, comprises approximately a group of 15 students.

PLANNING A NURSING CLINIC:-

The most effective nursing clinics are those that are planned, which involves__
(i) determining the purpose,
(ii) selecting a patient for whom students have given nursing care,
(iii) securing the patient's consent and proper legal clearance,
(iv) selecting the setting to be used-the patient's bedside or a conference room visited by the patient;
(v) providing advance preparation of the student in terms of the name of the patient, the purpose, place, date and
time, and any specific instructions regarding preparation for the discussion.
Preparation of a nursing clinic consists of three phases, that include____

PREPARATION PHASE
This phase involves:-
• Determining the purpose of the clinic
• Selecting patients for the clinic and determining when they are going to be visited. Patient chosen for the
clinic should have typical rather than unusual conditions. The dramatic and typical condition may leave the
student with erroneous impression
• Getting the consent from the patients
• Selecting the setting for conducting the clinic (Patient's bedside or conference room)
3

• Instructing the students what they have to observe and the contexts in which they have to be well prepared
• Collecting all relevant, and necessary, patient related data well ahead.

CONDUCTION PHASE

The conduction phase consists of group discussion.

Introduction: During the introduction phase, the students have to be acquainted with the patient's background,
other pertinent details about his management, purpose of the clinic, significant observations to be made and
questions to be asked.

Patient centered discussion: During this phase, the data collected should be analyzed, needs and problems of
the patient has to be identified and a successful line of nursing management has to be outlined using the
problem-solving approach. Patients has to be given opportunity to verbalize their concerns and how they meet a
particular problem situation. If the patient is unresponsive or tired, the clinic should be better stopped.

Post-clinical discussion: During the post-clinic session, students have to discuss the various strategies in which
the particular patient can be successfully dealt with, have to identify problem-solving techniques suitable for the
patient, and design intervention strategies for him.

CONCLUSION PHASE

The students and the supervisor conjointly come to a conclusion about the management of the patient and
prepare a summary of the clinic. The group work together, and take solutions using the problem-solving
approach and the responsibility to act on the problem is delegated to one or more of the students.

KEY FEATURES:-
 An informal discussion about a patient related problem.
 The nursing clinic is a group discussion which utilizes the presence of a selected patient, whereby the
nursing aspects are presented and discussed.
 In a nursing clinic the patient's medical history and therapy are discussed only briefly, but the emphasis
is on the nursing problems, including the physical, mental and social aspects.

ADVANTAGES OF NURSING CLINIC:-

 The Nursing clinic provides learning in real practical environment to the students.
 It enhances the critical thinking and problem-solving skills of the students.
 It mandates all the group members to participate in the conference.
 It develops the skills in collecting relevant information from the patient and analyzing them.
 It is advantageous to the patients, if properly conducted and guided.

LIMITATIONS OF A NURSING CLINIC:-

The following points to be kept in mind while conducting a Nursing clinic_
 The Nursing clinic, is conducted in front of the patient, all communications should be very carefully
made.
 The patient should not receive any information that he should not.
 Nothing should be done or told which may hurt his feeling or embarrass him.
 It may be time-consuming.
 The group can accommodate only a small number of participants (not more than 8 to 10).

CONCLUSION:-
Clinics are valuable as a teaching and learning device because instruction is carried on in direct relation to the
patient. It develops the powers of observation and stimulates thought and consideration of the nursing care of
the patients. All the students apply their knowledge, skills, attitudes and appreciation to the subject of the clinic.
Clinics also help to meet situations presented by the patient.
