For the learner:


Welcome to the Arts 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Elements
from Tradition, History of Community to One’s Artwork

Do you love art? Have you ever dreamed of becoming an artist? Art has been a
part of our lives for as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years,
people have been creating, looking, criticizing, and enjoying art. I would like to
address three questions: what is art, what is its purpose, and why has it survived
for this long?

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. It will enable you
to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know

In this module, you will learn and understand the different elements
and characteristics of art from tradition and history. The folk arts in the
community is still full of life, it includes history and a diverse culture of the
people in the MIMAROPA and Visayas group of islands region. You will
experience to make an artwork related to our tradition that may be useful
to our everyday lives.
After going through with this module, you are expected to discuss
elements from traditions/ history of community for one’s artwork

Specifically you are expected to:


1. identify the elements used in the arts and crafts of
MIMAROPA based on history
2. create ”mask” in your own version and creativity
3. value the importance of arts and crafts in the life of the
people.

What’s In

In the last lesson, you had learned about Embroidery. This art is one of
the most beautiful artwork that MIMAROPA offers. This skill was developed from
generation to generation because among others, this art was the primary activity
that they did in the region. This skill can easily be learned by anyone and
everyone, because hand sewing was needed for a sustainable living during their
period of time.
To appreciate the MIMAROPA and Visayas group of islands arts
and crafts better, in this lesson, you will be learning some activities which
help us understand the element that was derived from their artwork and
how their art was developed in specific areas of the country according to
its function and expertise.

What is It

Elements of art - stylistic features that are included within an art piece to
help the artist communicate. The seven most common elements include
line, shape, texture, form, space, color and value.

Weaving is the primary arts and crafts of the MIMAROPA region. They
create different products in weaving as their artworks.
Here are examples of weaving products:
1. Mat weaving ( Basey Samar) - type of weaving made
up of tikog Mat
or buri leaves. Mat

2. Bag (Romblon) - beautifully woven bags that are


made up of romblon.

3. Tingkop basket (Palawan) – baskets naturally made of


bamboo.

4. Basket ( Mindoro, Bohol) - made up of Nito grass, rattan, and
bamboo.

5. Peña ( Aklan) - cloth weaving that originates from


fibers of pineapple leaves .

Festival is annually celebrated for cultural and religious purposes.
People at this time are united upon showcasing their culture and beautiful
history of the province. They create things full of artistry just to look
different from the others. In one way to another, this is the only time
wherein they can show to everyone how rich their culture is, and how
creative they really are.

Some examples of MIMAROPA festivals:

1. Ati-Atihan ( Kalibo Aklan ) - kind of festival to


honor Santo Nino. They wear colorful costumes
with headdresses that are made up of abaca
fibers, shells, feathers, bamboo, cogon and sugar
cane flowers.

2. Masskara Festival (Bacolod ) - comes from two


words - “mass” means crowd and “cara” meaning
face. Their place is dubbed as city of smile
because of their festival. The dancers are wearing
mask with the designs made up of coconut sprouts
( new growth of plant), colorful betel nut, violet,
red, or yellow San Francisco leaves, and annatto

(used for coloring food or fabrics).

3. Moriones Festival ( Marinduque ) - celebrated


during holy week wherein people portray the
Roman soldiers. They wear mask called as
Morion that means “mask or visor” that covers
their face.

4. Pintados Kasadyaan (Leyte) - religious celebration to


honor Santo Niño, the holy child. The dancers in this
festival have their tattoos from head to toe with beautiful
designs that look like armor to the warriors.

Architectures:

1. Molo church (Iloilo ) – described to be a


Gothic and Renaissance style. The church
has two spires (pyramidal structure on the
top of a building) towers and the interior
elements such as altar show the gothic
characteristic. It is built with white coral
rock that makes the whole thing attractive.

2. The Ruins (Talisay Negros Occidental) - was


built in memory of Mariano Ledesma
Lacson’s late wife in 1900s in neoclassical
architecture. The wall finishing which were
made of egg whites mixed with cement gave
it its marble-like appearance

container for the excumed (to remove a body from the
place where it is buried) deceased.

Tagalog Region of the Philippines. The term MIMAROPA is consisting of

of four regions. MIMAROPA and Visayas group of islands` arts and crafts
depict the different aspects of their __________ and tradition.
The Iraya tribes display an artistic design that is called ________,
while mat weaving is known and famous in the Island of ________.
Architecture is one of the cultural heritages that we should be proud of in
this country. The Ruins in Talisay is a style known as ________ in nature.
In the Visayas region, they have their incomparable folk arts, motif
and design. The primary form of arts and crafts in the Panay Island
is______ where in fact they considered it as the textile capital in the
Philippines. Most of all, we celebrated festivals in the country. We Filipinos
adore showcasing our skills and talents but more than that, this is our way
of showing and preserving our culture and tradition. __________ is a kind

believed that this festival is the most colorful festival in the country.

 Cartolina
 Water color
 Pencil
 Pair Scissors

Steps on how to create mask


1. Draw an outline of a face using the cartolina, then draw the eyes
and mouth outline inside the face.

2. Cut out the outline


3. For the nose, make an isosceles (with two equal sides and two
equal angles) triangle.

4. Using with the remaining pieces of cartolina, use it to create a


simple pattern as a diagram for you.

5. Paste the nose that you have made in step three on the mask and
then color the entire mask.
