What’s In

characteristics of arts and crafts of the MIMAROPA and the Visayas group of
islands region. Also, you had identified their artwork according to its elements
from tradition and history. Furthermore, we create masks based on the

as young artist in this generation in making your own tattoo design.
To appreciate more on MIMAROPA and Visayas group of islands work
of art, this lesson will help you analyze the importance of art according to its
function, expertise, and resources that may applicable for life.

3
What’s New

Directions: In your home try to look for something that you considered as old
or traditional, it could be a thing or an artwork. Why is a keeping or valuing old
thing at home important? Explain.
Examples:

What is It

Can you still recall how beautiful the arts and crafts that people in the
MIMAROPA islands have, based in the previous lesson? Their craftsmanship
shows that anything they create had an important impact to people because
these are the products that depicted their culture. They develop and enhance
their crafts to let others appreciate and acknowledge the significance of their
artwork in the life of the MIMAROPA people and if possible the entire country
as well.

The following are examples of the MIMAROPA artworks that are primarily
useful to all of us:

1. Weaving:

Banig weaving- a handwooven mat usually used for

sleeping. Because of the abundance of buli ( buri
palm ), people create mats beautifully with many
designs. This type of mat is traditionally found in
many parts of the country particularly in Panay
Island. This is not a textile. Another region in the
Philippines uses dried leaves like in Basey, Samar.
Banig weaving
Their banig is usually made from dyed leaves, then
in Panay
cut piece by piece and then woven into mats which could be plain or
complicated.

4
2. Shell:

Shell - an important artwork of the Panay Island. This has

been used in the manufacture of decorative items such
as chandeliers and lampshades. It is also being used as
raw material for glue, chalk and varnish. Many people
were amazed because from a simple shell this can be
used to create beautiful crafts such as plates, utility
box, chandelier, windows and others.

Architecture:

Molo church- the Spanish Colonial heritage church

located in Iloilo City. It is a Gothic Renaissance style and
famous because this is one of the best attraction in the
Visayas region. This artwork is to be proud of because
only few churches nowadays are still standing in the
country that symbolizes history.

3. Festival:

Pintados is a cultural religious celebration

to honor the feast day of the Santo Niño (the Holy
Child). The word “pintado” derives from the body
painting traditions of the ancient tattoos of the warriors
during pre-colonial period. Pintados in Tacloban

4. Pottery

Pottery is the process and the products of forming container and other
objects with clay and other ceramic materials, which
are fired at high temperatures to give them a hard and
durable form.
Marinduque has identified ceramics and
pottery making to improve the local condition of some
local communities. People in the community treat the
arts and crafts as source of income that helped them
to run into business industry
