Lesson
Solving Products of Two Binomials
1

A binomial is a polynomial with two terms. For example, x – 1 and x +

3 are both binomials. In this lesson, we will review how to multiply these
binomials.

What’s In

Let us recall first how to use distributive property.

Example: (x – 1) (x + 3)
Steps Illustrations

Multiply the first term of the first (x – 1) (x + 3)

binomial to the second binomial.
x (x + 3)

Multiply the second term of the first (x – 1) (x + 3)

binomial to the second binomial.
(-1) (x + 3)

Write the expression in order using (x – 1) (x + 3) = x (x + 3) + (-1) (x + 3)

addition. Aside from using the word
combine we can also use the word
add.

In simplifying the equation, add the (x – 1) (x + 3) = (x2 + 3x) + (-x – 3)

result of multiplying (x – 1) (x + 3).

Combine like terms. (x – 1) (x + 3) = x2 + 3x - x – 3

(x – 1) (x + 3) = x2 + 2x – 3

Write the answer. Therefore, (x – 1) (x + 3) = x2 + 2x– 3.

Lesson  Solving Product of Sum and Difference of
Two Terms
2  Solving Product of Square of Binomials

What’s New

Sum and difference of two terms are two binomials with the same
terms but differ in operation signs. One is addition and the other is
subtraction. Examples are:
(x + 2) (x – 2),
(3x + 1) (3x – 1),
(2m + 2) (2m – 2).
Let us do this activity.

Activity 4: Pick Me
Let’s Find Out: Examples of product of the sum and difference of two terms
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen
Let’s Do It This Way:
1. Identify examples of sum and difference of two terms.
2. Write the answer in your Mathematics notebook.

Job well done!

Now, let us also identify what a square of binomial is.

11
Square of binomial is a binomial with an exponent of 2. Examples are
(x + 2) , (2m – 1)2 and (3s – 3)2.
2

Activity 5: Choose Me
Let’s Find Out: Examples of square of binomial
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen
Let’s Do It This Way:
1. Identify examples of square of binomials in the box.
2. Write the answer in your Mathematics notebook.

(b + 4) (d + 5)4 (f – 3)2 (5g – 2h)2

Congratulations for a job well done!

What Is It

Notice that the product in the given examples is a difference of two

squares like a2 – 25 and 4m2 - 16. The first term is the square of the first term
of the binomial and the second term is the square of the second term of the
binomial. These are the examples:

Steps Illustrations

1. Find the product of (a + 5) (a – 5).

Using the distributive property, (a + 5) (a – 5) = a (a - 5) + ________

multiply the first term of (a + 5) by the
second binomial (a – 5).

Then, multiply the second term of (a + (a + 5) (a – 5) = a (a - 5) + 5 (a – 5)

5) by the second binomial (a – 5).

Multiply a (a + 5) and 5 (a – 5) and (a + 5) (a – 5) = a2 - 5a + 5a - 25

combine their result.

12
Combine like terms -5a and 5a. The (a + 5) (a – 5) = a2 - 25
result is 0.

Note: However, using the pattern we can simply get the product as the
square of the first term minus the square of the second term.

Multiply the first terms of the two (a + 5)(a – 5) = (a) (a) or (a)2
binomials.

Multiply the second term of the two (a + 5)(a – 5) = (5) (5) or (5)2
binomials.

Write the terms in order with minus (a + 5)(a – 5) = (a)2 - (5)2

sign between them. Then simplify.

Write the answer. Therefore, (a + 5) (a – 5) = a2 – 25.

2. Find the product of (2m + 3) (2m – 3)

Multiply the first terms of the two (2m + 3) (2m – 3) = (2m) (2m)
binomials.

Multiply the second term of the two (2m + 3) (2m – 3) = (3) (3)
binomials.

Write the terms in order with minus (2m + 3) (2m – 3) = (2m)2 - (3)2
sign between them. Then simplify.

Write the answer. Therefore, (2m + 3) (2m – 3) = 4m2 – 9.

Let us now identify what a square of binomial is.

Observe the examples.

1. (x + 2)2

Steps Illustration

Multiply (first term) (first term) of the (x + 2)2 = (x) (x) or (x)2
binomial.

13
Get twice of the product of the first (x + 2)2 = 2 (x) (2)
and second terms of the binomial.

Multiply (second term) (second term) (x + 2)2 = (2) (2) or (2)2

of the binomial.

Write the terms in order. (x + 2)2 = (x)2 + 2 (x) (2) + (2)2

Simplify the equation. (x + 2)2 = x2 + 4x + 4

Example 2: Find the result of (2m – 3)2.

Steps Solution

Multiply the first term of the binomial (2m – 3)2 = (2m)2

by itself twice.

Double the product of the first and (2m – 3)2 = 2(2m)(-3)

second term of the binomial.

Multiply the second term of the (2m – 3)2 = (-3)2

binomial by itself.

Write the terms in order. (2m – 3)2 = (2m)2 + 2(2m)(-3) + (-3)2

Simplify the expression. (2m -3)2 = 4m2 – 12m + 9

To test whether you really understood the lesson, let us do the next activity.

Let us proceed to our next lesson.

Lesson
Solving Product of Binomial and Trinomial
4

Another type of multiplying polynomial problem is the product of a

binomial and trinomial. FOIL method cannot be used in this case since
trinomial has 3 terms but still the Distributive Property can be used to organize
the individual products.

19
What’s New

Let us first know when to use this special product.

Multiplying Trinomial by a binomial in this case can only be applied in
these special cases:

1. The first term of the trinomial is the square of the first

term of the binomial.
2. The second term of the trinomial is the product of the first
term and second term of the binomial and its opposite sign.
3. The last term of the trinomial is the square of the second
term of the binomial.

Observe the following examples:

1. (x + 2) (x2 – 2x + 4).
Steps How To Do It Illustration

In the binomial (x + 2),

(x + 2) (x)2 (x + 2) (x2 + ___ + ___)
square its first term.

Then, get the product of

the first and second
term of the binomial (x + 2) - (x) (2) = 2x (x + 2) (x2 – 2x + ___)

(x + 2) and its opposite opposite

sign.

Get the square of the

second term of the (x + 2) (2)2 = 4 (x + 2) (x2 – 2x + 4)
binomial (x + 2).

20
2. (x – 3) (x2 + x – 4)
Steps How to Do It Illustration
In the binomial (x – 3), (x – 3) (x)2 = x2 (x - 3) (x2 + ___ + ___)
square its first term.
Then, get the product of (x – 3) (x) (3) = 3x (x – 3) (x2 + 3x + ___)
the first and second
term of the binomial

(x - 3) and its opposite

sign.
Get the square of the (x – 3) (-3)2 = 9 (x – 3) (x2 + 3x + 9)
second term of the
binomial (x - 3).

Now, fill in the blanks the missing trinomial.

Activity 9: Let’s Do This

Let’s find Out: The trinomial given the binomial for the special case
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen
Let’s Do It This Way:
a. Identify the trinomial given the binomial for special case.
b. Write the answer in your Mathematics notebook.

1. (x + 2) (__________)
2. (y – 3) (__________)
3. (a – 5) (__________)

What Is It

It is important to note that the terms of the first factor of the binomial
(x+2) are related to the second factor of the trinomial (x2 – 2x + 4). The first

21
term of the second factor is the square of the first term of the first factor; the
middle term of the second factor is the product of the first and second terms of
the first factor; and the last term of the second factor is the square of the
second term of the first factor. To multiply this kind of special product, we
need to follow the following steps:

Find the product.

Example 1: Solve (x + 2)(x2 – 2x + 4).

Steps Illustration

Multiply the first term of the binomial (x + 2)(x2 – 2x + 4) = (x)3

by itself three times.

Multiply the second term of the (x + 2)(x2 – 2x + 4) = (2)3

binomial by itself three times.

Write the terms in order. (x + 2)(x2 – 2x + 4) = (x)3 + (2)3

Simplify the expression. (x + 2)(x2 – 2x + 4) = x3 + 8

Example 2: Find the product of (y – 3)(y2 + 3y + 9).

Steps Solution

Get the cube of the first term of the (y – 3)(y2 + 3y + 9) = (y)3

binomial.

Get the cube of the second term of the (y – 3)(y2 + 3y + 9) = (-3)3

binomial.

Write the terms in order. (y – 3)(y2 + 3y + 9) = (y)3 + (-3)3

Simplify the expression. (y – 3)(y2 + 3y + 9) = y3 – 27
