What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you formulate simple statistical instruments. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. Lessons are arranged in
the standard sequence of the course, but the order may be different from the
textbook that you are using.

The module is all about Simple Statistical Instruments.

Based on the competency, this module will help you formulate simple
statistical instruments (M7SP-IVa-3). Specifically you will:

a. define simple statistical instruments;

b. identify simple statistical instruments;
c. formulate simple statistical instrument.

In going through this module, widen your patience in order to

understand and analyze the problems given. Follow the given directions
and answer all exercises carefully. Enjoy and have fun!

How was your performance in the given activity? Were you able to
answer all the questions? What are the difficulties you encounter? Well, don’t
worry because this lesson will help you better understand how to formulate
questions using statistical instruments.

Simple Statistical Instruments

To answer your chosen problem, you should develop statistical

instruments to be used to gather data.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned how to identify categorical

from numerical data. So, before we’ll proceed to our new lesson, answer the
given activity below.
Activity 1: Identify me!
Let’s Find Out: How to identify categorical and numerical data?
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and ballpen
Let’s Do It This Way: Identify each of the following data sets as categorical
or numerical. Write C if the data is categorical and N if
it is numerical on your Mathematics notebook. Number
1 is done for you.

Statement Answer
1. Arm spans of the Grade 7 students N
2. Number of languages spoken by each of 20 adults
3. Favorite sport of each person in a group of 20 adults
4. Number of pets for each 40 Grade 7 students
5.Number of hours a week spent reading a book for a
group of Grade 7 students

5
6. Thickness of a book

Great job! You did it. Proceed

for more exciting activities.

What’s New

During lunch break, Sarah and Matteo are arguing on what social
media platform is the most-visited by netizens.

Facebook is the The YouTube channel is the

most-visited by most-visited because as of
netizens. 2012 it is the world’s 3rd most
popular online destination of
netizens.

After reading, can you tell right away what social media platform
is most-visited by netizens? Where would you begin to answer this
problem?
6
What Is It

A statistical instrument is any process whose aim is to describe a

phenomenon by using interview guide, questionnaire or a rating scale.

Here are the statistical instruments that are commonly used in

research.

1. Interview guide
It is a list of questions to be asked face to face to gather data from the
respondents. It can be structured or unstructured interview.

Types of Definition/Description Examples

Interview Guide

Structured Is an interview following  What is your favorite

Interview a set of sequence of subject? Why is it
questions. your favorite subject?
 What is your best
area of strength
outside school? Why
are you good at that?
 What did you want to
be when you were in
elementary school?
What do you want to
be when you are an
adult?

Unstructured Is an interview which  Tell me about

questions and it is more  What is your greatest

casual. strength?
 Do you think TV is
educational?

Here are the answers to the given examples:

Questions Types of Reasons

2. Questionnaire

It is a printed list of questions to be answered by respondents to collect

data. It can be structured or closed format or unstructured or open format.

Questionnaire Definition/Description Questions begin with

respondents.

9
Study these examples:

1. Which kind of TV program do you like best?

Cartoons News

Entertainment Soap opera

2. Which way do you prefer to watch a movie?

Go to the cinema On DVD

Online On TV

3. A restaurant manager requests her customers to fill in the form. What type
of statistical instrument does the manager use?

A. Structured or closed format C. Rating scale

B. Unstructured or open format D. Interview

These are examples of a structured or closed format instrument

because among the four choices you have to choose only one answer.

How about these examples?

1. What kind of entertainment do children like?

2. Why did you choose to eat at Elvie’s food chain?

3. What school subject did you enjoy the most?

4. If you change just one thing about your hobbies, what would it be?

These are examples of unstructured or open format instrument

because the respondents have the freedom to answer in their own words,
instead of limiting their responses to a set of pre-selected choices.

10
3. Rating scales

It is often used in survey research and respondents are ask to rate or

select a response in ranked manner.

Take a look at this:

1. Watching TV too much makes people lazy.

(1) Strongly disagree (2) Disagree (3) Agree (4) Strongly Agree

2. How would you rate the services in Mang Juan’s Restaurant?

(1) Excellent (2) Very Good (3) Good (4) Poor

3. Students have more time using cell phones than reading books.

(1) Strongly disagree (3) Agree

(2) Disagree (4) Strongly Agree

4. Do you feel affected by the recent changes of your school this school
year?

(1) Strongly not affected (3) Affected

(2) Not affected (4) Strongly affected

These are examples of a rating scale instrument because the

respondents are asked to rate or select a response in ranked manner.

11
Do you find the lesson interesting?
Let’s have more examples.

What’s More

Activity 2: Identify Me!

Let’s Find Out: What statistical instrument is used?

Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen/pencil

Let’s Do It This Way: Determine the type of question of each item by writing
SF for structured format, UF for unstructured format,
RS for rating scale, SI for structured interview and UI
for unstructured interview. Write your answer on your
Mathematics notebook. Number 1 is done for you.

Statement Answer

1. What brand of milk do you prefer? SF

2. How satisfied were you with our customer services?

3. Where do you see yourself five years from now?

4. Are you in favor of corporal punishment in the
classroom?

5. How did you meet your best friend?

6. Is it true that a starfish is a fish?

7. What fictional character did you know the most and
why?
8. Are you in favor of an additional two years in the

12
high school curriculum?

9. Why did you choose to study in a public school?

10. In the scale 1-5, how would you rate our services?

Great job! You are an

excellent learner. Be ready for
more fun activities. Enjoy!

What I Have Learned

Activity 3: Match Me!

Let’s Find Out: What are the statistical instruments?
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen/pencil
Let’s Do It This Way: Match the definitions in column A with the
corresponding terms in Column B. Write the letter that
corresponds to the answer on your Mathematics
notebook.

Column A Column B

1. It is the list of questions to be A. Structured format

asked face to face to gather
data from the respondents.
B. Questionnaire
2. The questions in this format can
have different answers.
3. It is an interview which does not C. Unstructured format
use any set of questions.
4. These are often used in survey D. Interview guide
research to ask the respondents
to rate or select a response in a E. Unstructured interview
ranked manner.

13
5. The questions in this format are F. Rating scale
usually asking for just one
answer.

What I Can Do

Activity 4: Formulate Me!

Let’s Find Out: How to formulate the questionnaire using the rating scale.
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and pen/pencil
Let’s Do It This Way: In your Mathematics notebook formulate three rating
scale questions or statements given the topic. The
first
question is done for you.

Topic: Too much use of gadgets

1. Too much used of gadgets is not good for your health.
(1) Strongly disagree (2) Disagree (3) Agree (4) Strongly Agree

Now that you have learned how to

formulate statistical instruments, you are now
ready to answer the assessment in the next
page. Have fun!
