9 Drains.
Note: Valves and flanges for burn protection of personnel must be insulate with Blanket
Will and Thermal Jacket FLEXIM type.
6.3 Personnel Protection
Insulation for personnel safety is required only when accidental contact of the hot
surfaces could be made by personnel within normal work or walk areas.
If personnel protection is required, physical barriers such as open mesh guards,

level, or to surfaces that are in such a position where accidental contact may be
possible. Valves, flanges, and unions shall not be insulated for personnel protection;
however, if field inspection reveals possible hazard, insulation shields or other means of
protection should be provided to prevent personnel from coming in contact with hot
surfaces.
For surface process temperatures >480°F (248°C), insulation is to be used for personnel
protection; its thickness shall not be less than 1.0 inch (25mm). The economic insulation
thickness should be sufficient for personnel protection.

equivalent to 1/8" asbestos cloth to insulate aluminum from hot surfaces. Holes cut
in aluminum as required for valve stems, etc. Aluminum overlaps cut back
insulation on pipe adjacent to fitting.
• Aluminum secured with stainless steel metal screws along longitudinal joint and

condensation, solidification, etc., the required insulation thickness shall be calculated
separately in accordance with superficial temperature which we want to keep or
permissible temperature difference along the piping.

Calcium silicate is a very rigid, high-density material used exclusively for applications
above 250°F (121°C). This insulation material has been a standard for high temperature
applications for many years.
Compressive strengths are very good, and it is noncombustible. It is suitable for
temperatures from 250°F (121°C) up to 1000°F (538°C).
Calcium silicate is manufactured from a slurry that is poured into molds to make various
pipe-covering shapes. It is generally available in half sections, quad-sections, and flat
blocks.
Calcium silicate is applied to the piping with metal bands and generally covered with a
metal jacket.

Foamglass insulation is a high-strength, versatile insulation used in temperature
services that range from 450°F (268°C) up to 900°F (538°C). Foamglass insulation is all
closed-cell glass with no organic binders or fillers. The closed-cell glass structure
renders it impervious to liquid water and the driving force of water vapor pressure. It is
manufactured in flat blocks which are then fabricated into any shape specified.
Fabrication techniques are governed by ASTM Standard Recommended Practice for
Rigid Thermal Insulation, Nominal Sizes of Pipe and Tubing. On hot piping applications
Foamglass is applied to the pipe in single or double layers with metal bands. No
sealants are used on hot applications. It is then covered with metal jacket.
The following tables specifies the minimum insulation thickness of Type III to be applied
to piping and equipment for heat protection:

Expanded Perlite insulation is generally used in the same types of applications as

Calcium Silicate.
It is somewhat lighter in density and lower in compressive strength than Calcium
Silicate; however, it usually is treated with a water inhibitor.
The following tables specifies the minimum insulation thickness of Type IV to be applied
to piping and equipment for heat protection:

Mineral Wool and Fiber glass are actually two separate and distinct types of insulation;
however, many of their applications and physical properties are similar.
These products are generally used in hot applications, but with some restrictions they
can be used in cold applications as well.
Fiberglass is often used from chilled water piping temperatures up to a maximum of
850°F (454°C).

Mineral wool has a peak temperature limit of 1200°F (649°C).

Mineral wool is made from rock slag fibers and bonded together with resin or clay
binders.
These materials are generally applied with metal bands or wire or tape and are covered
with a metal or nonmetallic flexible jacket.

Mineral wool shall have the following properties;

• Non-combustible, Euroclass category A1.
• Chloride contents less than 15 ppm and 10 mg/Kg.

8 APPLICATION

8.1 General
Insulation on equipment and piping shall be stopped far enough from flanges to permit
the removal of bolts and have the end of the insulation near the flange beveled at a 45°
angle.
On the bottom heads of vertical vessels, block insulation shall be secured in place by
wiring to lugs welded to the surface of the head and skirt.
8.2 Procedures
Thermal insulation on equipment and piping shall be applied in accordance with the
following procedures:
• Clean outside surfaces of the equipment, and apply primer coat or / and
intermediate in accordance with MANUFACTURER’s procedure.
• Apply expanded perlite block insulation. When applicable double layered insulation
shall be applied using the staggered joint method, with all joints tightly fitted
together to eliminate voids.
• Secure the insulation in place with stainless steel; bands on 12 inch centers for
vertical equipment and 9 inch on centers for horizontal equipment. Secure piping
insulation in place with tie wire (4 inch and smaller pipe) or bands on 9 inch centers.
• Install moisture barrier between calcium silicate and aluminum.

Insulation

• Apply weatherproofing mastic to all irregular surfaces.

Weatherproof the insulation with aluminum jacketing. In any case, a 3-inch overlap shall
be provided at both vertical and horizontal joints and all joints shall shed water. “Z” clips
shall be placed on 18-inch centers in all horizontal joints on vertical equipment. All
cutouts in aluminum jacketing shall be weatherproofed by flashing with aluminum sheet
and/or caulking with suitable mastic flashing.
Secure the aluminum jacketing in place using one of the following methods:
• Band the jacketing on 3’-0” centers and fasten all edges of the jacketing using #8
aluminum sheet metal screws or aluminum pop rivets on 6 inch centers.
• Band the jacketing on 6’-0” centers and fasten all edges of the jacketing using #8
aluminum sheet metal screws or aluminum pip rivets on 4 inch centers.
• Terminate pipe insulation adjacent to uninsulated flanges with beveled aluminum
covers. The covers shall be sealed against the pipe.
On vertical vessels with a diameter of 6 feet or larger, the corrugated aluminum
jacketing shall be further supported by attachment to horizontal metal bands running
circumferentially around the outside layer of insulation.
One band shall be used for each horizontal row of aluminum sheets and shall be located
beneath the jacketing halfway between the top and bottom edges of the sheets.
Pipes with a diameter < 25mm or instrument tubing of equipment (e.g. pumps,
compressors) are often complex configurations (e.g. bends, pressure gauges,
temperature meters, small valves etc.) which should be insulated with suitable insulation
materials, e.g. glass or rock wool rope or flexible elastomeric foam.
