9 Drains.
Note: Valves and flanges for burn protection of personnel must be insulate with Blanket
Will and Thermal Jacket FLEXIM type.
6.3 Personnel Protection
Insulation for personnel safety is required only when accidental contact of the hot
surfaces could be made by personnel within normal work or walk areas.
If personnel protection is required, physical barriers such as open mesh guards,
protective metal sheeting/screens or hand railings and hazard markings shall be used
instead of insulation, if the surface process temperature is ≤ 480°F (248°C).
2 Personnel protection shall be applied to surfaces within a vertical distance of 7 feet and
a horizontal distance of 3 feet from the edge of any normal walking or working platform
level, or to surfaces that are in such a position where accidental contact may be
possible. Valves, flanges, and unions shall not be insulated for personnel protection;
however, if field inspection reveals possible hazard, insulation shields or other means of
protection should be provided to prevent personnel from coming in contact with hot
surfaces.
For surface process temperatures >480°F (248°C), insulation is to be used for personnel
protection; its thickness shall not be less than 1.0 inch (25mm). The economic insulation
thickness should be sufficient for personnel protection.
For personnel protection, uninsulated flanges, valves, pump, etc., shall be insulated as
follows:
• Recover in fiberglass cloth, external with silicone for weatherproofed, reinforced
with stainless steel mesh. Internal insulation by mineral wool 4.5 lbs/ft3, secured
with stainless steel accessories, pins and hooks. Secured the jacket with
galvanized wire in hooks".
• Corrugated-perforated aluminum wrapped around flanges, valves, etc., with
corrugations parallel to pipe. Utilize insulating blanket with insulating value
equivalent to 1/8" asbestos cloth to insulate aluminum from hot surfaces. Holes cut
in aluminum as required for valve stems, etc. Aluminum overlaps cut back
insulation on pipe adjacent to fitting.
• Aluminum secured with stainless steel metal screws along longitudinal joint and
1/2” wide by .020” 304 (also known as 18-8) stainless steel bands around
circumference at each end.
6.4 Material Requirements
All materials shall be selected to suit the local weather and environmental conditions.
• Type I insulation is calcium silicate and shall be used for heat conservation
purposes. Thickness of insulation shall be in accordance with Tables I and II herein.
• Type II insulation is Foamglass and shall be used for personnel protection
purposes. Thickness shall be in accordance with Tables III and IV herein.

angle.
On the bottom heads of vertical vessels, block insulation shall be secured in place by
wiring to lugs welded to the surface of the head and skirt.
8.2 Procedures
Thermal insulation on equipment and piping shall be applied in accordance with the
following procedures:
• Clean outside surfaces of the equipment, and apply primer coat or / and
