Subject: Mathematics X
Activity Type: Experential Learning Control No. 3
Activity Title : Graphs of Polynomial Functions
Learning competency : Understand and interpret the graphs polynomial functions.
Learning Target : Determines the position of the graph of a polynomial function with respect to the x-axis.
References : Advanced Algebra by Soledad Jose-Dilao, et al.

The graph of a polynomial function is smooth, that is, the graph has no sharp corner with a series of hills and valleys.
The hills and valleys are called the turning points. The maximum possible number of turning points is one less than the degree
of the polynomial (n-1). It is also continuous; this means that the graph has no holes or gaps.

One very useful concept in graphing polynomial function is the position of the points with respect to the x-axis at the x-intercepts.
In the figure below, the polynomial function has x intercepts a, b, c and d.

Example:
Graph the polynomial function P ( x )=( x+ 2 )( x−1 )( x−3 ) .
In graphing the polynomial function, identify the x intercepts. These are -2, 1 and 3 and these are also the zeros or roots
of the function. With these zeros of the function we can derive four regions namely; x <−2, −2< x <1, 1< x <3,and x >3.
having the zeros of the function as the boundaries for each regions.
The table of signs and the rough sketch of this graph can now be constructed.

Intervals x ←2 −2< x <1 1< x <3 x >3

Test Value -3 0 2 4
X+2 - + + +
x-1 - - + +
x-3 - - - +
y= ( x +2 ) ( x−1 ) ( x−3 ) - + - +

Exercise:
Construct the table of signs then sketch the graph of the following polynomial functions.
1. P ( x )=( x+ 3 ) ( x +1 ) ( x−1 )
