CHAPTER I

Introduction
Teenage pregnancy is an issue that needs attention by the government
and schools. It is currently increasing in many countries especially in the Philippines.
Many teenagers nowadays are already pregnant at such a young age and most of
them are not in legal age to be in that situation. Moreover, this circumstance affects
their education such as academic performance, student productivity and mental
health status. It needs to prevent by teaching them the proper education about this
one includes using contraceptive measures. As a matter of fact, pregnancy is such a
big responsibility of a human being. It is hard to be parents especially when you are
at a young age, you don’t have the about it. Literally, at that age, teenagers are not
yet ready to reach their full maturity physically, emotionally, and mentally. So, they
don’t know how to take that responsibility on being parents. Teenage pregnancy is a
pressing problem to all people in a country.
Teenage pregnancy is defined as a teenage girl, usually within the ages of
13-19, becoming pregnant. The term in everyday speech usually refers to girls who
have not reached legal adulthood, which varies across the world, who became
pregnant. Teen pregnancy is a health issue that affects all of us. A child having a
baby as a teenager is more likely to face critical social issues like poverty, poor
education, risky behaviors that lead to poor health issues, and child welfare. The
financial cost of teens having babies is financially devastating.
Educational attainment is difficult for the teen mother, and this leads to
decreased economic opportunities and earnings throughout their lifetime. Teenage
pregnancy is a world disaster, and it has become a major concern to both developed
and developing countries all over the world. Adolescent pregnancies are a global
problem but occur most often in poorer and marginalized communities. Many girls

face considerable pressure to marry early and become mothers while they are still a
child. It can have devastating effects on teen’s social life.

Negativity, social alienation, and the financial distress can wreak havoc in
anyone’s life, let alone that of a teen, which isn’t yet mature or strong enough to
face the world. Our society relies on moral beliefs, ethics, and human etiquettes. And
unfortunately, teenage pregnancy is viewed as taboo. Society as progressive as it
wants to be, cannot embrace the concept of a pregnant teen mother. For many
adolescents, pregnancy and childbirth are neither planned, nor wanted. (Galingan,
2014)
Teenage pregnancy remains to be one of major educational matters
impacting students’ performance in the modern world. High rates of illiteracy in
society and archaic cultural customs are other factors that contribute to adolescent
pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is a global occurrence with clearly known causes and
serious health, social and economic consequences. Pregnant girls often dropout of
school, limiting opportunities for future employment and perpetuating the cycle of
poverty. In many cases, girls perceive pregnancy to be better option than continuing
their education.
Teenage pregnancies have a significant negative impact on the lives and
health of young people and their families. Teenage moms are more likely to abandon
their studies and refuse to pursue additional education in order to care for their
offspring. A teenage or underage female becoming pregnant is the simplest
definition of teenage pregnancy. Early pregnancy also carries the dangers of birth
complications. This can lead to problems at home and school. (Montecillo,2018)

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature
Teenage pregnancy rates across the Asia Pacific Region have declined over the
past two decades. The alarming situation continues despite the effort of the
Philippine government to pass laws and implement programs related to
reproductive health. Teenage pregnancy is a social problem that affects and
destroys the future of teenager, especially teenage learners. Its impact is not only
felt by the teenagers, but also their families, schools and the country in general.
(Masilo, Gregorio,2018)
Teenage pregnancy attempts to determine the lived experiences among high
and low performing students in terms of the causes, effects, challenges and their
coping mechanisms. Teenage mothers have less possibility to finish their studies
after engaging in early pregnancy. The academic performance, financial status and
support of the family of teenage mothers determine if they can pursue their
studies and achieve their dreams in life. Sex and sexuality education should not
just be a concept but should be developed further as a complete discipline, and
much more research should be conducted to that regard. (Pogoy, Verzosa,
Coming, Agustino, 2014)
The purpose of this one is to investigate the case of early pregnancy and
students’ performance in secondary schools and suggested possible solution to the
problem. Early pregnancy is so effective to girls since majority have not been able
to continue their education as their parents are not willing to pay school dues as
they are taken misfortunes. It recommends that the government/ministry of
education and sports should fight tooth and nail to provide special needs to the
learners for example sanitary pads to keep them in schools while in menstruation.
