It is anticipated that no specific hazardous substances will be needed to carry out the tasks as specified in section 2.
Full Details of all chemicals used by SHLS are available upon request

6. METHOD STATEMENT

The method described is for someone who has the competence to work on Escalators & lifts safely.
Control Measures
 All site personnel are trained in the hazards related to working on Escalators and the safe working practices which must be
adopted. Training needs are regularly reviewed and refresher training’ is carried out periodically to ensure competence levels
are maintained
 Safe systems of work have been developed and implemented for all servicing and maintenance activities. Site activities are
regularly monitored to ensure that standards are being met
 Suitable Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Safety Harnesses, Boots, Gloves, and Overalls etc.) is issued to, and used by,
all site personnel. Employees have been trained in the use of the equipment and are aware of the procedures in place to
request repairs I replacement items
 Risk Assessments required by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations have been carried out.
Employees have been informed of the assessment findings and are aware of the control measures to be adopted
 Where on-site personnel identify that physical or procedural control measures which are not under the direct control of SHLS
are required, they have been instructed to adopt safe working practices in order to ensure the safety of themselves and
others. In cases where the attending SHLS employee deems there to be an unacceptable level of risk they have been
instructed not to work on top of the lift car
 Recommendations for the improvement of safety standards are reported to clients as part of SHLS standard service
reporting procedures
 Wherever possible SHLS will work with its client’s to improve on site safety standards. However, where clients consistently
fail to meet their statutory duties as lay down by Section 4 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, i.e. by failing to
ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that their lift asset (including the associated access routes) presents no danger to
health and safety, SHLS will decline their business until such time that sufficient improvement is made

Control Measures (Under the control of the client)

Note: The provision of physical measures (e.g.,fixed pit ladder, lights etc.) does not in itself constitute an adequate control. If a control is to remain
effective it must be regularly monitored and maintained to an appropriate standard

 The structural integrity of the Escalator (Including any services which are routed through it) is monitored at regular intervals,
where defects are detected which might endanger persons working below remedial repairs are completed promptly
 Safety Information and Hazard Warning signs are prominently displayed.

Method 1:
SHLS engineer to carry out safe access procedure.

contact with the office. Location of staff can be identified via
vehicle tracker & PDA logs, however regular contact needs to
be maintained to ensure an operative can get help as soon as
possible, in the event of an accident, incident or illness.
Where signal strength to mobile phones is limited or non-
existent, which affects connectivity of phones and hand held
tracking devices, operatives are required to contact the office
at given times during the day to advise on their location,
intended location and welfare. They are also required to notify
the office or out of hours service on completion of their last job
of the day.
It is not always possible to identify all hazards relating to a role
or task, especially where the workplace is remote and outside
of the company’s control, therefore all workers should
undertake a dynamic risk assessment before lone working.
Should an operative feel additional controls are needed or feel
it is not safe to carry out the work then they should not proceed
