Georgetown University Essay 1

As a current cadet at The United States Military Academy at West Point, I have had the privilege
of being part of a community committed to discipline and leadership. However, since joining the Army, I
have realized that the military isn't the career path that most resonates with my interests and aspirations.
The military will provide me with a solid foundation of leadership, but I have come to realize that I yearn
for a different kind of experience—one that is more diverse and inclusive. The civilian life is more in line
with my personal and professional goals, which having a role in society, I trust myself more with. I am
someone who values creativity and engagement with the world, and pursuing an education at a renowned
institution like Georgetown is exciting. Furthermore, the chance to be a civilian and fully explore the non-
military career paths that suit me the best is something I am familiar to experience. While West Point
provides military training and education, it has a specific focus on preparing students for service in the
military. Georgetown University offers a diverse civilian education, which can prepare me with a broader
range of skills and expertise that are useful in a wide range of civilian careers. I value the freedom to
pursue something that aligns more closely with my personal goals and take care of myself by doing
something I want to do and enjoy. As a native of Maryland, Georgetown is close to home and that is one
of the main reasons why I am looking to transfer there. Additionally, my goal is to work in Washington
D.C., so being close to the city would benefit my career aspirations. My future goal is to work in a
technology company in Washington, DC, and reside there. Transitioning from a military-focused
environment at West Point to a civilian-focused environment at Georgetown will allow me to pursue and
deeply focus on my interests in technology and making a difference in society through a different lens.
Continuing my education at a new institution at Georgetown will help me achieve my future
goals in several ways. One of my biggest goals in the future is to have a family and to become a mom.
Being in the Army would cause a strain on my future family relationships due to deployment, trauma, or
emotional distance. However, a more stable civilian lifestyle would be best suitable to combat that.
Graduating from Georgetown University with a prestigious degree can open numerous job opportunities
with higher earning potential. With a stable and well-paying job, I can provide for my family financially,
leading to a more secure lifestyle. I will be equipped to balance my work and family responsibilities,
leading to a more stable family life.
I have always been curious about the world outside of my bubble. This curiosity led me to seek
out opportunities to gain experience in diverse cultures. One of the most formative experiences of my life
was studying abroad in China for a few months the summer before freshman year. Being in a different
country forced me to step out of my comfort zone and adapt to a new culture and language. I learned to be
more open-minded, patient, and resilient in the face of challenges. I discovered a passion for exploring
unfamiliar places and immersing myself in diverse ways of life. As I reflect on my background and
experiences, I realize that my skills and talents lie in my ability to connect with people. I am a good
listener, empathetic, and open-minded. I believe that these qualities will be valuable in a diverse
community like Georgetown, where I can contribute to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

As I consider transferring to Georgetown from my current institution, I am seeking a more

diverse and dynamic academic environment that will provide me with the opportunity to further expand
and see diverse backgrounds. I am excited about contributing to the vibrant community at Georgetown
and continuing to learn and grow as a person.
