ASSIGNMENT: PAVEMENT DESIGN

CEN: 210 Highway Engineering

All questions need to be replied. Total marks awarded are 20. Weightage will be assigned to arrive at
component weightage as defined in Lecture Plan. Write your replay in your own language. The replies will be
checked for similarity as per institute policy. Reply with similarity will be rejected without any further
consideration.

1. Differentiate:
a. Top-down cracking and Bottom-up cracking
b. Temperature differential and Zero stress temperature gradient

2. A 3 day 24-hr traffic count on a single lane rural road during harvesting period has resulted in the
following: bicycles 457, trucks 9, tractor-trailer 55, cars 15, motorcycles 200, animal drawn vehicles
25. Area has two harvesting seasons, each having duration as 2.5 months. Peak harvesting period is
15 days. The ground water table is found 10 m below the ground level. Average rainfall in the area is
750 mm. subgrade soil is of type CL with PI of 13, MDD 1.68 gm/cc and OMC 12% and CBR 5%.
Determine the most optimistic pavement thickness and composition.
3. Design a cement concrete pavement using the given data:
a. Four-lane divided National Highway g. State Bihar
b. Design life 30 years h. 28-d compressive strength 40 MPa Min
c. Lane width 3.5 m, transverse joint spacing 4.5m i. 28-d flexural strength 4.5 MPa Min
d. Traffic 6000 CVD, both direction j. Unit weight of concrete 24 kN/m3
e. Effective CBR of compacted subgrade 8% k. Poisson’s ratio of concrete 0.15
f. Growth rate of CV 7.5% annual l. Elastic modulus of concrete 30000 MPa

The percentage of front steering single axle, rear single axle, rear tandem axle and rear tridem axle,
based on axle load survey, comes out to be 45%, 15%, 25% and 15%, respectively. The percentage of
commercial vehicles with spacing between the front axle and the first rear axle at less than 4.5 m
distance is 55%. 60% of the commercial vehicles are found traveling during night-time (midnight to
6 AM). The axle load spectrum is observed to be as given in Table below.
