Design Activity 1: Product Study

Hiteshi Meisheri | Roll No. 23110135 | B. Tech. Class of 2023 | 9th January, 2024.

PART A: CHANGING HATS

Product Name: Clothes Drying Stand
1. Industrialist: High capital investment in
manufacturing equipment but high profit margins
as it is a consumer product (Retail)
2. Marketing expert: Sustained demand, organised
market, product is fit for additional branding and
advertising.
3. Technology expert: Appeasement with minimal
parts and standardised design (no customisations),
manufacturing process can be automated.
4. Activist: Concerns about the environmental impact
of high usage of plastic (in product and packaging
as well) and toxicity of powder coating used on
metal rods.
5. Consumer: Requirements of durability, lightweight
frame for easy movement and enough ground
clearance to hang long clothes.

PART B: FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

Name Hooded Zip Jacket
Purpose To protect the user from
moderately cold weather
How does it work? This layer of clothing must be worn
over regular clothes to cover the
user’s torso completely. Provides
additional warmth.
Structure and main parts A jacket with a hood, drawstring,
full length sleeves, pockets, and a
zipper-based opening.
Materials and manufacturing Inner layer: Wool or cotton fleece
process (to provide insulation and warmth)
Outer layer: Dyed cotton cloth
Zipper: Metal (durable)
Image 2: Hooded Zip Jacket Machine manufactured.
Critical detail The alignment of the zipper’s teeth
and the length of the hood’s
drawstring.
Usability requirement Must be fashionable, lightweight,
warm and a slightly loose fit.
GENERAL LEARNINGS:
1. Internal conflicts between different departments developing the same product.
2. Realisation about the never-ending demands from the consumer.
3. Example about the rabbit design on cutter not catering to Jain households was
important in understanding that products are not inherently good or bad, they are
good or bad for particular customers (at specific price points).

CHALLENGES:
1. Changing hats: Same problems were raised again and again for different products. The
exercise became difficult to innovate in.
2. Functional design: We were not bold enough to select a difficult product and ended
up analysing a simple mechanical pencil.
