TITLE :" Construct a channel for a given specific discharge.”
1.0 RATIONALE

It is necessary for Civil Engineering technologist to understand the behaviour

of fluid flow in different water carriages. Basics of hydraulics and its
application oriented content will help them to solve practical problems in the
field of Water Resources, Irrigation, Environmental Engineering and Public
health Engineering.

1.1 COMPETENCY

Apply hydraulics principles in water carriage systems and water retaining

structures.

AIMS /BENEFITS OF THE MICRO PROJECT –

AIMS : Construct a channel for a given specific discharge.

LITERATURE REVIEW:

1. INTRODUCTION: An open channel is defined as a passage through which

water flows under atmospheric pressure or under the force of gravity. The flow
of water in an open channel is not due to any pressure as in the case of pipe flow,
but it is due to the slope of the bed of the channel. The longitudinal slope to the
free water surface is the hydraulic gradient of the open channel. During
construction of channel uniform slope in its bed is provided to maintain the flow
of water. The channels of rectangular and trapezoidal sections are widely used
for irrigation and sanitary engineering.

There are different types of channels based on cross sectional area.

Artificial Channel- it is a channel which is built artificial for carrying water for
various purposes.
e. g. Irrigation cana
Natural Channel- it is a channel which has irregular sections of varying shape,
which is e. g. Rivers and Streams. Developed in natural way.
e. g. Rivers and Streams.

Specific Discharge:- It represents the volume of water that flows through a unit
cross sectional area of porous media per unit time. The apparent velocity term
is sometimes used because by cancelling L2 of the flux units, the units become
L/T, which are velocity units.

2
Open channel flow- The flow which takes place in open channels under the
effect of gravity is called open channel flow.
OR
Fluid flow with a free surface open to the atmosphere

Open channel flow Pipe flow

Flow is due to difference in total head Flow is due to bed slope under effect
two points between. of gravity..

No force on top surface. It has free top surface.

Flow is under atmospheric pressure. Flow is under pressure

Water surface is hydraulic gradient. Hydraulic gradient is an imaginary line

plotted.

Channel must have falling gradient, so Gradient must be rise or fall for rise,
as to achieve pumps are flow.

Computation of flow is done either by Computation of flow is done by Darcy-

Manning's required. Weisbachformula or Chezy's formula.

 Discharge measuring devices for channels

Notches:-A Notch may be defined as an opening provided in the side of tank,
with extreme liquid level below the top edge of the opening. The opening extends
eveneven above the free surface of the liquid in tank. It is like a large orf be
having no upper edge A Notch may have only the bottom edge and sides. The
bottom edge over which liquid flows is known as sill of crest. The sheet of f
bowing over an Notch is called as Nappe Or Vein. A notch is generally made of
a metallic plate. It is used to measure the flow of liquid from a tank.

 Determination of Discharge through open Channel

By Chezy's Equation
One of the earliest formula for the flow in open channels was suggested by chezy-
Antoine de, A French engineer in 1775.
V= C√RS
Where, V= Average velocity in m/s
R= hydraulic mean depth in M, R= A/P
S= bed slope of channel.
C= Chezy's constant depends upon the roughness of channel boundary and where
is from 55 to 85.

 Assumptions made in Chezy's formula

1) Flow is uniform, hence there is no acceleration no change in depth and
hydrostatic pressure on the bed.
2) flow is turbulent. The resistance two f bor is mainly due to the roughness of
perimeter and varies as V2.
This formula is commonly used for solving problems of partially flowing pipes.

4
 Manning's Equation
This formula was presented by the irish engineer Robert manning in 1889. It
gives better results then Chezy'sformula and is extensively used for design and
analysis of channels.
The Manning's formula is expressed as
V=1/N*(R2/3 S1/2)
Where, V= Average velocity in m/s
R= Hydraulic mean depth in m, R= A/P
S= bed slope
N= Manning's coefficient of Rugocity Or roughness.
