MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD – ASSIGNMENT NO. 1

1. Write the next three terms of the following:

a. -4, -1, 2, 5, 8, 11

b. 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25

c. 6, 9, 14, 21, 30, 41, 54

d. ½, ⅔, ¾, ⅘, ⅚, ⁶/7

e. 7, 17, 27, 37, 47, 57, 67

2. Look for the meaning of the following terms and give example(s):

a. Symmetry – the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each

other or around an axis

Examples:

b. Order of Rotation (given the n-fold rotational symmetry) – a figure has order

n rotational symmetry if 1/n of a complete turn leaves the figure unchanged

Example:

• A star can be rotated 5 times along its tip and look at the same

every time.
c. Packing Problems – a class of optimization problems in mathematics that

involve attempting to pack objects together into containers

- a type of problem in combinatorial geometry that involves

placement of figures of a given size or shape within another

given figure

Example:

3. Give other examples of patterns in nature. Discuss.

• Clothes. People tend to use clothes with different patterns or

designs such as plaid, stripes, floral, and many other more.

4. Write a short essay/article about the nature of Mathematics.

Mathematics, as we all know, is a crucial part of our everyday lives. We

might be unaware but everything we do involves the use of Mathematics as it

encompasses application across various disciplines. In Science, mathematics is

an important tool to analyze data. Many in demand fields also rely on mathematics

such as engineering, finance, economics, and medicine. It also plays an integral

role in developing individual’s critical thinking skills as well as the problem-solving

abilities which are necessary in our everyday living. Mathematics also helps us in
understanding how things work in a way that it enables us to formulate formulas

for us to solve our different queries in life.
