Elements of Various Segments for a News Broadcast on Television

Background Information for Learners

Television news broadcasting is the broadcasting of various news events and other
information via television. The content is usually either produced locally in a television
studio newsroom or by a broadcast network. Various segments make up a news broadcast on
television.

Segments in a News Broadcast

1. OBB or Opening Billboard – Standard first video of every show, usually a short video intro
of the show and contains the title and logo of the program

2. Headlines - Teaser of the top stories in a news show which usually appears right after the
OBB

3. Body - Main content of the newscast. It comes in various formats such as VTR -
standalone spiels of the anchor; AV or audio video - voice over narration of reporters,
accompanied by visuals whether moving or stills. The body is usually scattered in gaps
spread out in the entire newscast.

4. Teaser - Short video of upcoming stories to generate interest among viewers

5. CBB or Closing Billboard - End video in every show and usually accompanied by the
closing credits

Elements of the Segments of TV News Broadcast

Segment Elements Description


OBB or Opening Fast-Paced It is fast moving and quick in manner but conveys

Impressive It has an overall striking and remarkable
impression.
Teasing It provides a teaser of what is expected in the show
thus generating an air of surprise and excitement of
what is about to be viewed.

Punchy While it teases the viewers, it also provides a direct


preview about the newscast.

Headlines Eye-catching It catches people’s attention through trigger words.
It is visually appealing.
Believable It is factual or error-free.
Easy to read It is readable. Anything that makes a headline
difficult to read will cause people to skip over it.
Brief Make headline short but substantial. Brevity is the
key.
Accurate Give audience a good and clear idea of what they’ll
be viewing. Ambiguity is nice in fiction but news
broadcast is not fiction.

Body Detailed It provides a detailed reporting of news. Factual


information is given vividly to allow viewers to get
across the news content in no time.
Organized It is well-planned and properly structured.
Logical It is developmental, sequential, and hierarchical
following newsworthiness, suspense, and interest.

Teaser Compelling It is convincing and persuasive.


Attention- It keeps viewers from changing the channel or
Grabbing flipping off television.
Varied Just as the newscast itself is a blend of hard-hitting
news and lighter fare, teases should reflect that
variety.
Visual Video is important in crafting an effective tease.
Occasionally, a teaser is so compelling that words
alone will convince people to watch, but that is a
rare exception.

CBB or Closing Significant It provides a sensical ending relevant to the theme

Engaging While it ends the broadcast, it should also engage
the viewers in such a way that it gives them a sense
of conclusion yet invites them to watch out for the
next broadcast episode.
