What I need to know

Welcome to the third week of Computer Systems Servicing! But before we

continue, here are some information you should know:

For the facilitator:

As the facilitator of this module, kindly orient the learner on how to go about in
reading and answering this learning material. Please be patient and encourage the
learner to complete this module. By the way, do not forget to remind the learner to
his/her notebook in answering all of the activities found in this module, unless stated
otherwise.

For the learner:

This module contains training materials and activities for you to know the types
of computers. This module will help you achieve the required first competency in
Computer Systems Servicing. This will be the source of information for you to
acquire knowledge and skills at this level of competency. The aid of this material
helps you gain the competency independently at your own pace.

This module has a challenging activities & assessments to nurture you for
further development. It covers the knowledge, skills and approaches required to
complete the competency. You are required to go through a thorough reading and
understanding towards the end of the module. In each learning outcome, learning
elements and reference materials are available for your further reading to assist you
in the required activities.

You are expected to finish the following:

LO 3. Set router/Wi-fi/wireless access point/repeater configuration

Objectives:

• Know how to configure a Patch Panel

• Know the principles of a Patch Panel
• Know the parts of a Patch Panel

2
What’s In

You know how to configure straight through, apply it in the patch panel
configuration.

Direction: Write the correct color coding of a Patch Panel.

What’s New

Patch panel is needed in networking to simplify wirings. This is the proper

procedure. Insert the wires to its proper place by inserting the desired color-coded
wires to its tooth.

Direction: Insert the color-coded wire to the tooth of the color-coded patch panel.

3
What is it?

LESSON PROPER

What Is the Difference Between Ethernet & Patch Cables?

Ethernet and patch cables are usually referred to interchangeably, although

there can be differences between the two. A patch cable is a generic term that can
be used for multiple types of cabling (such as telephone or audio/video, in addition to
Ethernet).

Patch panel

A patch panel, patch bay, patch field or jack field is a device or unit
featuring a number of jacks, usually of the same or similar type, for the use of
connecting and routing circuits for monitoring, interconnecting, and testing
circuits in a convenient, flexible manner. Patch panels are commonly used in
computer networking, recording studios, radio, and television. Fig. 1 shows Patch
Panel.

4
Figure 1 Patch Panel

CONFIGURING PATCH PANEL

MOUNT THE PATCH PANEL

1. Remove the patch modules from the patch panel by pressing the latches inward
until the latches disengage from the opening. Refer to figure below. Fig. 2 shows
mounting the patch panel A.

5
Figure 2 Mounting Patch Panel A

2. Using two of the four mounting screws, mount the patch panel onto the bottom
bracket of the SCS enclosure. Refer to figure shown below. If a starter panel is
being used, subsequent patch panels should be installed below the starter panel.
Fig. 3 shows mounting the patch panel B.

Figure 3 Mounting Patch Panel B

TERMINATION

1. Trim the cable to length. Strip the cable to the dimension given in Figure 4.

Figure 4 Cable Strip Length

Routing the cable

6
1. Separate the voice (telephone distribution) and data (computer networking) cables
and insert them through the cable hole plugs of the SCS enclosure. It is
recommended that the voice cable should be located on the left and the data cable
on the right of the SCS enclosure. See Figure 3. Allow a minimum of 46 cm [18 in.]
of excess cable inside the SCS enclosure.

2. At the back of the patch panel, attach a universal wiring label, with the T568A color
code side out, to each patch module. Refer to Fig. 5 Detail A.

PORT 6 PORT 4 PORT 2

PORT 5 PORT 3 PORT 1

Figure 5 Detail A
Important notes

Rear panel port numbering may be different from this photo. Some patch
panel have their own wiring scheme and placements. Please do read your manual to
obtain correct configuration.

3. Arrange the wires according to the T568A color code (See figure 6 and 7) if you
are going to use T568B just interchange the position of green to orange, white
green to white orange and terminate the wires to the blocks according to the
instructions included with the tool. Keep wire twisted to a maximum of 13 mm [.50
in.] from the termination. Refer to Figure 5 Detail B.

7

Figure 6 Color Code

4. Install the patch modules into the opening of the patch panel, feeding excess
cable into the wall cavity.

5. Label each port to identify the cable.

Note:

Back panel configuration of patch panel may vary depending on its manufacturer.

What’s More
Activity 1

Direction: Identify the RJ45 Pinout color code which is labelled in numbers from 1 to
8.

9
Assessment I

Briefly explain the significant points of having a patch panel in 2-3 sentences.

Activity II

List down the materials and tools needed in assembling a patch panel.

Assessment II

Briefly explain the patch panel VS switch, and how do they differ from each other?

Activity III

Interconnect the different devices to the Patch panel to form a network.

10
Assessment III

Briefly explain how the patch panel works in 2-3 sentences.

What I have learned

jack? a. Snips
b. Cable stripper
c. Toner probe
d. Punch down

d. 4,5 and 6,7

Having a patch panel helps reduce the risk of unplanned outages by making it
much easier to add and remove cables without touching the main hardware. Patch
panels can serve a similar function to a hub or even a switch in many cases.

Patch panels bundle multiple network ports together to connect incoming and
outgoing lines including those for local area networks, electronics, electrical systems,
and communications. When patch panels are part of a LAN, they can connect computers
to other computers and to outside lines.

What I can do?

Name the devices that comprises the network.

12
