Imperfect tense
-The imperfect tense is commonly used to describe habitual actions that were on going
To set a scene in the past. As well as specific scenes in the past. To form the imperfect tense,
you must take infinitive form of the verb, remove the “re” ending and add one of these endings (
depending on the pronoun ) :
- Vo
- Vi
- Va
- Vamo
- Vate
- Vano
Irregular stems
- Fare becomes Face
- Dire becomes Dece
- Bere becomes Bece
Before the past principle of the verb, a conjugated form of Avere or Assere must be added
because they are auxiliary verbs
Avere is added when the verb is not an action ( meaning that the subject does not have to move
and does not change in their place in time)
- example: ho mangiato un pomme
- Ho perso la mia cellulare
Essere is the auxiliary verb for the past participle of verbs which result in a change in state and
motion. For example, andare ( to go ), venire ( to come ), nuotare ( to swim ) , correre ( to run ) ,
camminare ( to walk ), uscire ( to go out / to exit ).
- The past participle for essere verbs can change due to the gender of the subject and the
number ( either ito/ita, uto/uta, ata / ato and the ending with change to either I for male
pronouns or E for plural female subjects ), the past participle ending with a = female
and o=male
