ITEM TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT ITEM RECOMMENDED
MATERIALS
157 Feeler Gage
WARNING: Stabilized ground operation within the propeller restricted RPM range can generate high propeller stresses and
result in fatigue damage to the propeller. This damage can lead to a reduced propeller fatigue life, propeller failure
and loss of control of the airplane. The propeller restricted RPM range is defined in the airplane flight manual.
Contact the airplane or propeller manufacturer for corrective actions if a propeller restriction or limitation is
violated.
2. Propeller Governor
A. Removal
(1) Remove the upper forward engine cowl.
(2) Remove the cotter pin, castellated nut, washer, and bolt securing the governor control lever to the propeller speed control
linkage.
(3) Remove the cotter pins, castellated nuts, washers, and bolts securing the fork ends of the two governor arms to the
governor actuating lever.
(4) Disconnect the wiring to the shutoff valve solenoid and (except on airplanes equipped with autofeathering) the magnetic
pickup.
NOTE: The governors on earlier airplanes (serials LJ-114 through LJ-164) did not incorporate a solenoid
shutoff valve but were installed with a separate shutoff valve. On such installations, the oil lines
from the governor to the valve must also be disconnected. Cap or plug the open lines and ports.
(5) Remove the four nuts and washers anchoring the governor to the mounting pad on the reduction gearbox front case.
B. Installation
(1) Install a new gasket over the 4 studs on the governor mounting pad.
CAUTION: Make sure the gasket is placed on the mounting pad with the raised side of the gasket screen up
so that it will fit into the recess in the base of the governor.
(2) Position the governor on the mounting pads and secure it in place with the four attaching washers and nuts. Apply a torque
of 170 to 190 inch-pounds to the mounting nuts. Lock the nuts in place with cotter pins.
CAUTION: The alignment of the locking slots for the cotter pins must be obtained without exceeding the
maximum torque of 190 inch-pounds.
(3) Secure the fork-end of each of the two governor arms to the actuating lever with the attaching bolt, washer, castellated nut,
and cotter pin.
CAUTION: Do not exceed a torque of 25 inch-pounds when installing these attaching bolts and nuts.
(4) Secure the governor control lever to the propeller speed control linkage with the attaching bolt, washers, castellated nut,
and cotter pin.
(5) Reconnect the wiring to the shutoff valve solenoid and (except on airplanes equipped with autofeathering), the magnetic
pickup.
NOTE: The governors on earlier airplanes (serials LJ-114 through LJ-164) did not incorporate a solenoid
shutoff valve but were installed with a separate shutoff valve. On such installations, the oil lines
from the valve to the governor must be reconnected.
(6) Check under the governor spool with the special feeler gage (157, Table 401) for a "Z" dimension of 0.084 ±0.002 inch. If
necessary, make the adjustments described in Rigging Engine Controls for Reversing Propellers (Ref. Chapter 76-00-00)

until the proper "Z" dimension is obtained.

(7) Reinstall the engine cowl.
