1 Scope

1.1 JDM F21 specifies the requirements for electroplated zinc nickel coating for fasteners (see note
1) or hydraulic connectors and hose fittings made of steel or of copper alloy. JDM F21 specifies coating
thicknesses and other coating requirements, and gives recommendations for hydrogen embrittlement
relief for parts with high tensile strength or with high core or surface hardness. The coating is specified
according to ISO 15726.

Note 1 Fasteners can include: pins, snap rings, washers, spring rings, screws, threaded bolts, and nuts.

1.2 JDM F21 applies primarily to electroplated coatings on threaded fasteners and hydraulic
connectors and hose fittings. JDM F21 may also be used on non-threaded fastener and fastener
accessories. The appearance for parts with JDM F21A is a dull charcoal gray.

Note 2 JDM F21 provides increased corrosion resistance compared to JDM F19.

D 2 Application D
R 2.1 JDM F21 should be used where a zinc coating plus a trivalent passivate does not provide the
resistance to rust to meet customer expectations. Examples are: fasteners, fittings, connectors, clamps,
spacers and other components.
R
A 2.2 Two coating specifications are defined in JDM F21:
• JDM F21A for hydraulic parts and
A
F • JDM F21B for fasteners or parts not crimped after plating where the nickel content can be a
higher percentage. F
T 2.3 Two color options are included:
• clear/ transparent or
T
• black.

2.4 Two equivalent methods for specifying the coating are included:
• using a John Deere specification or
• using an International Standard.

2.5 The coating specification uses a surrogate bolt as a low cost method of measuring the effective
friction and resultant torque for threaded connectors and fasteners. The intent is to ensure the assembly
torque of zinc nickel plated components is equivalent to zinc plated components that have hexavalent
chromate. See clause 4.5 and 4.7 on the use of a surrogate bolt to measure the torque.

Plating per JDM F21B

3.6 For new standard parts with JDM F21 coating, the designation of the part according to the
specification for the part is supplemented by the designation of the coating. The designation determines
the standard, or the choice of standards, that applies for the coating.
Example 19MXXXX Hexagon head bolt ISO 4014 – M12x80-8.8 – JDM F21B

3.7 For parts to standards, which do not reference JDM F21, the complete JDM F21 designation of
the coating shall be given with the designations of the part that are to be coated according to JDM F21.
