Multimedia Elements
1 Contribute to the Meaning
of a Text
Visual elements help readers see what they're reading and multimedia elements
combine more than one type of medium, typically in digital form. Both contribute to
a text in different ways. They help the reader clarify the meaning of the text.

The Bug Collection

by Andrew Frinkle

Peter had to do a bug collection for

school. He was required to get several
different orders of bugs, and at least one
species of each of those orders. Orders
were groups of similar bugs, and species
were specific examples. There were 29
different orders of bugs in the world, but
most bugs came from four common
groups, while the others could be quite
rare. He knew if he could catch about ten species of bugs from four different orders,
he’d get a good grade.
So, he went outside with his bug net and caught a Yellow Cabbage Butterfly
almost right away! That was a member of the Order Lepidoptera, which included all
the butterflies and moths. He caught several more butterflies and moths over the
next few hours, including a swallowtail butterfly and a moth almost the size of his
hand that had been hiding on a tree, blending in. He’d have to look it up in a book
later to see what kind it was.
The second order he found was Orthoptera. This was the group of bugs that
included grasshoppers and crickets. He caught a black cricket under the rose
bushes, and then snagged a big fat green locust flying through the yard. It was hard
to catch that one, because it flew so fast. Hymenoptera was the next order he found,
but it wasn’t that hard. There was a whole anthill filled with fire ants by the back
porch, and there were black ants in the driveway. Then he found a dead wasp in a
spider’s web near the barn. Those were both in the same group of insects.
After that, it got harder. He got down on his hands and knees and crawled
through the grass, eventually finding a ladybug. Those were in the Order Coleoptera.
He didn’t find any other beetles, though. He did find a spider, but that didn’t count.
Spiders were Arachnids, creatures with eight legs. Insects were only supposed to
have six legs. Regardless, he could not keep the spider for his collection. He saw a
dragonfly, but it was too fast, and that meant he didn’t have a member of Order
Odonata. He got lucky and found a walking stick before he gave up for the day.
That was a rare member of the Order Phasmida, which included camouflaging
bugs like leaf bugs and stick bugs. It seemed like he’d get a pretty good grade
after all!

What is It

Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as

text, audio, images, animation, video and interactive content. Multimedia contrasts
with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only or
traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.

Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, dynamic, interacted with or

accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and
electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance.

Assessment

Read the story carefully and correctly. Make a graphic organizer showing the
structure of a flower given on the selection.

The Structure of the Flower

The lower and outermost part of a flower are the sepals. They are usually
green. They look like leaves. They form the protective covering of the flower when it
is still a bud.

Above the sepals are the petals. Petals often have bright colors because they
attract insects. Growing just above and within the circle of petals are the stamens.

Each stamen has a long stem like part called filament. At the top of the
filament is another which is filled with yellow or reddish dust-like grains called
pollen.

The innermost part of the flower is the pistil which has three parts – the
stigma, the style and the large base called ovary. Within the ovary are small
structures called ovules. Seeds develop from the ovules.

First, let us discuss what is a paragraph.

A paragraph is composed of more than one sentence with one topic or idea. The first
sentence is always indented. It has three parts, the topic sentence, supporting
sentence, and closing sentence. A good paragraph should have unity and coherence.
This is an example of a paragraph:

Pineapple is one of the famous products of Barangay Sumalo, Hermosa Bataan.

When summer comes the barangay was busy harvesting pineapples. Many fruit
vendors buy pineapples and sell them in the market. The farmers are busy and
hardworking to produce a quality product. It is good to patronize the famous
pineapple fruits in your barangay.

 What sentence is being talked about in the paragraph?

Answer:
The paragraph is about the pineapple, which is the famous product of
Barangay Sumalo, Hermosa Bataan.

This sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph and controls the
whole paragraph. It is called topic sentence. It may be found in the
beginning, middle, or at the end of the paragraph.

 What is the ending sentence?

Answer:
The ending sentence is: It is good to patronize the famous pineapple
fruits in your barangay.

discussion of the topic.

The other sentences are called supporting sentence. It gives details

the topic sentence. It explains or gives the specific details of the main idea. It
can be facts or examples which makes the body related to the paragraph to
make it interesting. The writer should write relevant to the topic sentence.

topic sentence. For example:

Indented

The Coconut Tree, The Philippines “Tree of Life”

By Rosemarie Ramos

The Coconut Tree, a basic need for the people.

The Coconut Tree is a real symbol of the Philippines or shall I say an epitome
of a true blooded Filipino. Why? The Filipinos are so versatile and can do a lot of
work even at one time. They can cook while the nearly finished dress is being sewn.
A father can clean his car while at the same time watering the plants. The Coconut
tree on the other hand has its many uses as well. Because of that, it is called the
Tree of Life. Just like the ordinary Filipino, this tree is just simple yet can provide
as one of the basic needs of the people.
There are a vast of coconut trees in this tropical archipelago. As a small
child, we saw these trees growing in the farm where we usually play. We saw how
its fruits are being harvested. A man without any shirts on, slippers off – with his

bare foot would climb up with his bolo knife ( it is a kind of knife, a large cutting
tool of Filipino origin ) to cut – off a pool of coconut fruits.
I have known many friends from other countries and they were all telling
that it is only in the Philippines that they saw its many uses. Yes, that is why this

it can provide.
It protects, it feeds and it heals. When the tree reaches its 60 years, it can be a
good lumber for building a shelter or a house. A mature meat of coconut fruit which
is thick and is called Copra, can be processed into cosmetics, oil, soap and other
beauty products. What a wonder indeed!
Above, we mentioned that this tree heals. The coco water is a good cure for
Urinary Tract Infection. It can be effective too as a substitute for sports water.
Politics
Another wonder of this fruit is that it can be turned into a wine called “tuba” once
naturally fermented.

So, worry no more when you get here in the Philippines, need a shelter? Stop and
enjoy a sit under a coconut tree at the beachfront.
Let us answer the following questions.

What we read is what we

call a feature article.

Feature article is like writing a paragraph that is based

on facts, real events or sometimes people's emotions. It may
also include the writer’s opinion about a certain topic.

There are four main parts of an article:

● Title – part of the article which will serves as a topic

● Introduction – discusses the topic in broader and generalized

information.
● Body- includes the main idea and discussion of the topic.
● A Conclusion- summarizes the article and includes the writer’s opinions.

Steps on Writing Feature Article

I. Choosing a Topic
II. Reviewing Subjects
III. Preparing to Write the Article
IV. Writing the Article
V. Finalizing the Article
In creating a feature article there are rules that we need to consider:

First Rule:
In choosing the title in your article, it must be eye-catching or mysterious to get the
attention of the reader.

Second Rule:
The introduction must not discuss the main topic of the article. It must discuss the
generalized topic that has a connection with the main topic.

Third Rule:
The body of the article must have a complete supply of information that focuses and
discusses the main topic.
Fourth Rule:
In writing the part which is the conclusion, the writer must summarize the topic and
includes the writer’s insights and opinions.

Types of Feature Article

A coronavirus is a kind of common

virus that causes an infection in your
nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Most
coronaviruses aren't dangerous.
In early 2020, after a December
2019 outbreak in China, the World Health
Organization identified SARS-CoV-2 as a new
type of coronavirus. The outbreak quickly
spread around the world.
by Michael W. Smith, MD COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-
2 that can trigger what doctors call a
respiratory tract infection. It can affect your upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose,
and throat) or lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs).
It spreads the same way other coronaviruses do, mainly through person-to-
person contact. Infections range from mild to deadly.
SARS-CoV-2 is one of seven types of coronavirus, including the ones that
cause severe diseases like Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and sudden
acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The other coronaviruses cause most of the colds
that affect us during the year but aren’t a serious threat for otherwise healthy people.
