Speed Control of DC motor
Armature voltage
Braking
1. Regenerative Braking
2. Dynamic Braking or Rheostat braking
3. Plugging or Reverse voltage braking
Starting
𝐸𝑏 = V − 𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎 -----------------------------(1)
𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎 = V − 𝐸𝑏
V − 𝐸𝑏
𝐼𝑎 =
𝑅𝑎
Braking
1. Regenerative Braking
2. Dynamic Braking or Rheostat braking
3. Plugging or Reverse voltage braking
Regenerative Braking
𝐸 > 𝑉 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑁𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝐼𝑎
Generated energy is supplied to the source.
Flux cannot be increased substantially
Regenerative braking is possible only for Speed higher than
rated value
With variable voltage it is also possible below rated speed.
In DC series motor , regenerative braking is not
possible.
Solution

𝑉 = 220𝑉, 𝐼𝑎 = 200A, N = 800rpm , 𝑅𝑎 = 0.06A, Internal resistance of Variable voltage =0.4ῼe

Calculate internal voltage of variable voltage source when motor is operating in regenerative braking at

80% of torque and 600rpm.

𝐸1 = 𝑉 − 𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎 = 220 − 200X0.06 = 208V

𝐼𝑎2 = 0.8 𝑋200 = 160𝐴 𝑁2 600

𝐸2 = 𝐸 = 𝑋208 = 156V
𝑁1 1 800

V= 𝐸2 − 𝐼𝑎 (𝑅𝑎 +VR) = 156 − 200X(0.06 + 0.04) = 140V

Dynamic braking
2.The example of previous problem is operated under dynamic
braking at twice the rated torque and 800rpm. Calculate the value
of braking current and resistor . Assume linear magnetic circuit.
Plugging or Reverse voltage braking
Armature voltage control is preferred because
(i)high efficiency
(ii) Good transient response
(iii) Good speed regulation
It can provide the speed control only below rated speed.
Armature can not be allowed to exceed rated value.
