A. VOCABULARY
I. Translate the words / phrases which are underlined into Vietnamese.
Schooling is compulsory for all English children from the age of 5 to 16. The academic year in
England runs from September to July and is divided into 3 terms. Autumn Term is from the
beginning of September to mid-December. Spring Term is from the beginning of January to mid-March
and Summer Term from early April to mid-July. Each term is separated by a one-week break called half
term, usually at the end of October, mid-February and the end of May.
There are two parallel school systems in England. The first is the state school system, which is
free for all students and paid for by the state. The second category is the “independent” or “public”
school system, which is fee-paying. The state school system, which educates 93% of the pupils in
England, can be divided into two levels of education: primary education and secondary education.
See the Table below for more information about the school education system in England.
The National Curriculum is set by the government and must be followed in all state schools. It
is made up of the following subjects: English, Design & Technology, Geography, Maths, Information
Technology, Music, Science, Arts, Physical Education, History, and a Modern Foreign Language. English,
Maths and Science are core subjects, which are compulsory in the national examinations at certain
stages
of the school education system.

Gavin : Did, yeah, did you always listen carefully to your teachers?
Jenny : No, I don't think I did. No, I think I was quite disruptive, actually. What about you?
Gavin : Well, I think I did listen to the teachers certainly when I got to the level where I was doing the
subjects that I enjoyed.
Jenny: Yeah, ok, the next question is, did you always behave well?
Trang 2

Gavin : I don’t think I always behaved well. I was a bit of tearaway.

Jenny : Um. Well, I think I was pretty well-behaved on the whole, so I 'd say yes, yeah.
Gavin : Good for you.! Did you pass your exams easily?
Jenny : No, I can't say I did. No, I, I found the exams quite a struggle, actually. What about you?
Gavin : I didn't pass them that easily, though I worked hard I found it very difficult to answer all that
lone questions in a short time.
Jenny : Yeah, yeah, exactly. What about this one, then? Did you always write slowly and carefully?
Gavin : Quite slowly. Essays took a long time to write and I suppose I took a bit of care, yes.
Jenny : Yes. I agree. I was also. I was very careful and erm, yeah, yeah I was quite methodical.
Gavin: And did you think your school days were the best days of your life?
Jenny : Um, no, no. I can’t say they were. What about you?
Gavin : No, I went away to a boarding school when I was quite young and I didn't like that. No, they
weren’t the best days of my life.

1. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
It is commonly believed that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it
has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The difference between
schooling and education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no
limits. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in the kitchen or
on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in school and the whole universe
of informal learning. The agent (doer) of education can vary from respected grandparents to the
people arguing about politics on the radio, from a child to a famous scientist. Whereas schooling
has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a
stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People receive
education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process,
a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of
one's entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern
Trang 31

varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at
approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks,
do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they
are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by
the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are
not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what
the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the
formalized process of schooling.
