SUMMARY

The issue of rising temperatures has become relevant now more than ever

and is especially concerning for countries located in tropical areas like the

Philippines. In recent years it is observed that exceptional heat waves have

swept across the world, leading to record-high temperatures. The oceans have

been historically warm. (Ripple et. al., 2023). With this information, it raises

concerns for the condition and safety of the environment. Due to this, various

issues like appliances overheating, and areas catching on fire can be seen

happening more frequently as well. The researchers came up with a device to

combat these issues that will be named the (device), its purpose is to lower

temperatures within households by creating an automatic closing function in

windows through specific sensors embedded in the device.

BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM

Over the past century, the earth's average surface temperature has been

increasing rapidly. This rapid increase is first due to the carbon dioxide (CO2) and

other air pollutants accumulating in the atmosphere and absorbing sunlight and

solar radiation reflecting off the earth's surface. (DCCEEW, 2023). The rapid

increase in temperature can have a severe short-term effect on huge populations,

frequently result in public health emergencies, increase mortality, and have

downstream socioeconomic effects.

The high temperature of a particular immediate affects our health since it

affects the body's ability to regulate its internal temperature. Both internal body

heat produced by metabolic activities and external heat from the environment can

contribute to heat gain in the human body. Loss of internal temperature control
may lead to a variety of diseases such as heat stroke, skin cancer, heat cramps,

dehydration, heat exhaust, hyperthermia, etc. (National Institute of Environmental

Health Science, 2022). Temperature also influences the system's majority of plants

activities including photosynthesis, respiration, germination, and blooming; the

increase in temperature dehydrates the plant which causes them to wither. (Oregon

State University, 2020)

Our overall health is often reliant upon temperature in many ways. The

researchers came up with (title) to provide a succoring solution to the rapid

increase in temperature and unbearable radiation the sun strikes.

BENEFICIARIES

Through the possible implementation of the device, the community,

environment, and government may benefit from this in various ways. The primary

beneficiaries of this device may be the community especially those located in humid

areas, as the (device) thanks to its features, is capable of reducing room

temperatures lessening chances of a heat stroke to any people present in the rooms

as well as the possibility of any appliances overheating and in an even worse

situation if a device within the room catches on fire. The device may also provide

advantageous conditions for the environment along with the prevention of fires

occurring within buildings it will also prevent the spread of fires in local farms and

forests, especially during droughts when water resources are limited. With the two

previous beneficiaries benefiting from this device the government is also a major

beneficiary as it seeks to obtain a good way to maintain safety in the area allowing

them to proceed with plans that initially needed to be stopped as the rising heat

index presented issues with holding meetings that are essential to the development

of the local areas.

PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM PRESENTED

Issues with relation to the gradual increase of the heat index in the

Philippines have been persistent and escalated. Almost all regions in the country

suffers from temperatures spanning from 33°C to 41°C. This classification indicates

that the prevailing thermal conditions pose a significant risk of heat-related

illnesses if appropriate precautions are not taken. Individuals in these areas are

advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and limit exposure to the sun, especially

during peak heat hours, to mitigate the potential adverse health effects associated

with these elevated temperatures. The heat index alternatively termed the apparent

temperature, constitutes a metric that amalgamates the relative humidity with the

actual atmospheric temperature to ascertain the perceived thermal sensation

experienced by humans. It is predicated on the principle that elevated levels of

humidity impede the human body's capacity for sweat evaporation, thereby

reducing its ability to thermoregulate efficiently. This results in a sensation of

increased heat compared to what is suggested by the ambient air temperature

alone (Laqui, 2024).

Amidst the scorching summer, lies the sufferings of every individual.

Therefore, the researchers came up with a solution to combat this dilemma,

creating a device that automatically closes window binds once it senses the heat

and sun rays. This proposed device aims to stop the bud of heat from entering

indoors, specifically at home. This innovative device proposed by researchers will

use Arduino UNO as its central unit, providing a robust and reliable foundation.

Appropriate sensors for different purposes will be attached to the central unit. This

proposed device is appropriate for indoors especially at home as it can stand as a

shield to protect individuals from the burning heat outside from entering through

windows. A servo motor will be connected to the window bind. This will allow the
Arduino UNO programmed by the researchers using Arduino Programming

Language to control if the window should be open or closed, depending on the

sensed temperature and sun rays.

Moreover, a Liquid Crystal Display will be attached altogether to show the

temperature or the heat index sensed by the sensors applied. A WiFi Module will be

added to notify the users if the windows have closed or remained open. This can

work by making an application and through the internet. This will be utilized to

combat the continuous increase in temperature. However, even if this device is

implemented, it is important to keep in mind that every individual should stay

home and lessen exposure to sunlight to avoid unwanted diseases such as

heatstroke and dehydration. Therefore, discipline in oneself is the most important

and most effective armor against stubborn heat.

METHODS

Gathering of Materials

The researchers will buy and source the following materials necessary for the

study from trusted local and online sellers as well as professionals they may come

in touch with. Arduino Uno, Jumper wires, LCD, Servo motor, Window blinds,

ESP8266 WiFi Module, Light-dependent resistor, DHT22 temp and humidity sensor

are the materials that the researchers need and the researcher will also utilize

cutters, laptop, USB cable, soldering iron, screwdriver to build the device.

Cost Analysis
Once the researchers can obtain the following materials from trusted local

and online sellers recommended to them by professionals the estimated cost the

researchers will be expected to pay is 2,670 pesos.

Conceptual Design

The researchers came up with (title) to provide a succoring 45 to the rapid

increase in temperature and unbearable radiation the sun strikes. The (title) is an

extension device that will be connected to a window. It has an automatic feature

that can control if the window should be open or closed, depending on the heat

index detected by the humidity and temperature sensor. This will be implemented

by codings and programming with the help of Arduino Uno.

In the development of this device, the Arduino UNO will stand as the central

power unit or the heart of this device. The DHT22 Temperature and Humidity

Sensor will be attached together with the Light Dependent Resistor to the Arduino

UNO to install the feature of the device that could sense the temperature and sun

rays. Additionally, the servo motor and window blinds will be attached. The servo

motor will be connected to the Arduino UNO to control if the device will close or

open. The researchers added additional features which are the Liquid Crystal

Display (LCD) and the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module. The LCD will display the sensed

temperature of the sensors. Meanwhile, the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module will be used to

notify the users. Both of these will be attached to the Arduino UNO together with

the main materials.

All of the materials such as sensors will be inserted into the appropriate pins

of the Arduino UNO using tools such as soldering iron and screwdrivers. After

attaching all the materials, the researchers will connect the device to a laptop

through a USB cable and will program it using Arduino Programming Language. It

will be programmed to automatically close the window binds once it senses the

temperature increased or the sun rays hit the inside of the specific area, mostly

indoors.

Testing

In testing the (device),

Iterative Testing

The researcher will commence multiple trials to test the effectiveness of the

device in accurately adjusting the widow blinds depending on the light and heat

from a controlled light source and once the trial tests are done the researchers may
add modifications to the device such as changing to a sensor that better fits the

purpose they desire or adjusting the structure of the device.
