Honor before Honors

Dear Williams School Families, Wednesdays assembly was one to be remembered. The assembly featured Dr. Walker, former Head of the Williams School, telling us a wonderful story about how Forbes Candy started in the basement of The Williams School. Dr. Walker is quite the storyteller and he entertained our K-8 students, teachers and attending parents with some history about our school building. The 419 building was constructed in 1891, one of just 6 houses in the neighborhood at the time. Williams was first the home of the Burrow family. The Burrow room (a.k.a. Mrs. Hastings room) was named after Anastasia Devereux Burrow, and today her portrait hangs on the first floor of the front atrium area in the 419 annex. The Powells were the next family to move into the home, and they had a daughter named Marion. Students enjoyed hearing about Marions antics as a child and continuing on to her marriage to Charles Forbes while the pair was still in high school. The young couple started making peanut brittle in the basement of 419 Colonial and that was the beginning of Forbes Candies. Although my brief summary does not do the story justice, we are hopeful that Dr. Walker will be able to join us again sometime in the future. Hopefully, other parents will have the opportunity to hear and enjoy another Williams School story. And yes, they are true! Hope to see everyone at the Annual FunDance on Saturday night! Until then, have a nice weekend, Melanie

COMMUNITY IN THE NEWS board in the

front hall of the 419 building. Based on our Broadcast survey results, parents only wanted to have information that was posted in the Broadcast relevant to our students, school events and fundraising events. We created the Community in the News board to showcase the many ads, news articles and off-campus events that might be of interest to our community. Just to mention a few, the board currently features an article on Rowenas (McCormick Family), Alivia Thompson (Cogswell Family), a performance of Annie, Science Alliance Alive and Chef Hectors Thanksgiving Turkey Catering. Please stop by and catch up on our community happenings.

Fourth Annual Francophone and Hispanic 2-Day Celebration Thank you to all participants!

TWS celebrated its Fourth Annual Francophone and Hispanic 2-Day Event this week with some fun activities in the classroom and delicious cuisine in the cafeteria. The theme this year was Famous Hispanic and Francophone Persons in History. Mouth-watering desserts donated by generous parents were offered in the cafeteria. They were sold for 50c or a donation. The funds collected will help purchase blackboards for our Sister School, St. Gabriel School in Haiti. A blackboard on the Haitian market costs $60. The number of blackboards raised will be announced on Monday. Thank you to all who participated and supported this wonderful celebration. Gracias, merci, thank you! Sra. Milliner, Mme Pirnik and Mme Britz

The address for our site is thewilliamsschool.smugmug.com. It is a secure site, meaning our photos wont be found by an image search on the internet. The site is also branded with our school identification. The password to access our photo site is the school phone number (without the dash). You may view the galleries already uploaded. If you would like one of the pictures, simply right-click and choose save image as from your browser (PC directions) and choose the location on your computer where you would like to save the photo. To upload photos via email, follow the steps below. Smugmug prefers the jpg (jpeg) format for your photos: 1. Compose an email containing one or more photos or attach the photos to the email and send to thewilliamsschool@email.smugmug.com. 2. Type your photo email password into the subject line (the school phone number is the password do not include the dash) 3. Type the photo's caption into the body of the email (optional). 4. Send. SmugMug will automatically create a gallery named "email" and place your photos in it.

TWS Girl Scouts visit the Hampton Roads Show.

Once you upload, please send dladams@thewilliamsschool.org an email and let her know the category for your photos (such as family picnic or auction). Hopefully that will help us stay a little organized as I can then move the photos into galleries.

Keeping Williams Green Weekly Tip

The average American uses 650 pounds of paper each year 100 million tons of wood could be saved each year if all that paper was recycled. Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk, and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That's a lot of containers that can all be recycled!

More than 20 million Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of aluminum foil. Believe it not, ALL that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it so most it goes in the trash!

Grandparents Day Tuesday, November 22nd EVERYONE IS INVITED!

Too often in a small school we forget that our traditions are not clear to all members of our school family. Certainly it is a day to recognize and thank our grandparents. But, it is also a day to spend with mothers and fathers, and even uncles and aunts and special adult friends. So, we ask and encourage parents to attend the day with their children as well as grandparents. In addition, if your child does not have a grandparent who can attend, any adult member of the family or extended family is welcome as well. The goal of this service is to gather together as a school family before we break for the holidays. All are welcome. **Please note this is a dress up day for students** 8:05 Meet your student The following grades meet guests and start tour in Old Main (419 Colonial) K- Kindergarten Room 2nd Grade 2 Room 4th Grade 4 Room 5th Grade 5 Rooms th 8 Mrs. Justesens Room 7th Mrs. Lindgrens Room The following grades meet guests and start tour in Humanities Center (418 Colonial) 1st Library 3rd Art Room 6th Science Room **Grandparents (special guests) that have more than one grandchild in the school should meet the oldest first and then pick-up younger grandchildren before starting the school tour. 8:15 9:15 School Tour 9:00 Band Students report to the MPR and depart for the Chrysler 9:15 Students return to the same classroom they started the day in. 9:15 Guests may walk to the Chrysler or take the bus. 9:20 - Buses depart from the side of Old Main on Fairfax Avenue 9:30 10:15 Student Performance 10:15 - Dismissal in Huber Court 10:15 11:00 Individual art tours optional 10:20 &10:40 Buses to school Three Cities Cocktail Parties Home of Cindy & Bob Aston December 3rd, 2011 Home of Mike & LeAnne Benedetto January 14, 2012
