BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

What are Grammatical Signals or Expressions?

Grammatical signals or expressions are writing devices that serve to maintain text coherence or unity of ideas. They signal
relationship between sentences. They can be words or phrases that connect ideas of sentences and paragraphs for coherence.

Study the following statements carefully.

I believe that Japanese literature was heavily influenced by cultural contact with China and their literature because the
early Japanese literary works were often written in classical Chinese.

According to my research, it was Indian literature that had an influence on Japanese literature through the propagation of
Buddhism in Japan.

What does the sentences suggest?

What are the uses of the words in italics in every sentence?

Claim and Counterclaim Pattern

A claim persuades, argues, convinces, proves, or provocatively suggests something to a reader who may or may not initially
agree with you. This pattern is usually used in writing arguments. It reflects your interpretation, belief and opinion. It answers
the question “What do I think?”

Example:
Rock music has become popular for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the music; rather, the clear, fast beats
respond to the need of people on amphetamines to move and to move quickly.

Counterclaim – It is the strongest argument against your claim. It is responding to a claim by denying it with corresponding
reasons or evidence.

Example:
On the other hand, some people say that rock music contains lyrics that are both provocative and rebellious. This point of view
makes sense because in the article it states that “one form of rock music, punk rock, concentrates purely on antisocial subjects as
a basis for its songs.”

In the counterclaim argument, it shows opposition on the claim that rock music has become popular. It discussed the negative
side of the music.

Signal Words:
Claim: clearly, then, in light of, it is clear to me, I believe that, experts agree
Counterclaim: on the contrary, critics argue that, others may say that, while it maybe true, but, however, if you look at the
facts, it is often thought.

facts, millions of people were dead and many are still suffering
because of it.
