infected us, especially children like you? Today we are going to read a text about
communicable diseases. Are you ready?

Communicable Disease
A communicable disease is transmitted from one person or animal to
another directly or indirectly. A communicable disease may be caused by prions,
viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, or helminths. Examples of communicable
diseases in children include common cold, covid-19, Chicken Pox, Herpes
Simplex, Measles, Influenza (“flu”), hepatitis, and Intestinal parasites, among
many others. Some diseases can be prevented by vaccinations; others do not
have a vaccine. Examples of diseases which can be prevented by vaccination
include measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis, and some
types of hepatitis.

Common signs and symptoms of communicable diseases include runny

nose, excessive sneezing or coughing, sore throat, earache, swollen glands,
fever, headache, skin rash, nausea, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

Some diseases do not have a vaccine or the vaccines may be still under
development, for example, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and Ebola Virus Disease. Some
disease may not have a specific treatment.

According to report, the country has reported outbreaks of dengue,

diphtheria, measles, and polio. In August, the Department of Health declared a
national dengue epidemic. As of Nov 5, almost 400 000 dengue cases, including

1407 deaths, have been reported in 2019, which is 106% cases more than in
2018. Children aged 5–9 years have been the most affected age group for
dengue incidence (23%) and deaths (38%). For diphtheria, the Department of
Health has reported 197 cases with 47 deaths through Oct 5, an increase in
cases of 47% compared with the same period in 2018. In 2019, health officials
have also reported more than 42 200 measles cases up to early October. In
addition, measles complications were responsible for 560 deaths. More than
eight out of ten people affected by the measles outbreak were children aged 4
years and younger. For polio, four cases caused by infection with vaccine-
derived poliovirus have been reported in the country, which had been polio-free
for 19 years; these polio cases were due to low population immunity. The
Department of Health has now launched campaigns to bolster polio
immunization, planning to inoculate large numbers of children younger than 5
years in several parts of the country.

Parents, guardians and teachers and are responsible for the prevention of
the spread of infection in children. Common measures for the prevention of
infection include immunization of children and adults caring for children, hand
hygiene, prevention of exposure to blood and body fluids, taking appropriate
measures for a sick child in a school setting.
C. Post Reading A. Answer the following questions (the teacher will write the answer on the

B. Discussion
Let’s read the following sentences.
a. Based on the report of Department of Health (DOH), 23% of the infected
dengue cases are in the group of children ages 5-9.
b. There are 400 000 cases of Dengue last November 2019.
c. For diphtheria, the Department of Health has reported 197 cases with 47
deaths through Oct 5.
-If there are 400 000 cases of Dengue, how many children ages 5-9 are infected?
-How are we going to get the answer?
-If there are 197 cases o diphtheria and 47 of it died, what is the mortality rate?
-Giving another activity to check the pupils’ knowledge about percent, base and
rate.

C. Activities
Each group will be given text to read about the different communicable
diseases. They will use different way of presenting the text, it can be thru choral
reading, dialogue, news report, etc.

D. Generalization
What are the different communicable diseases?
How can we prevent getting infected?

E. Application
The teacher will play a short video clip about dengue. Then she will ask
questions to the pupils.
1. Who among you or in your family have experienced to be infected with
dengue?
2. What happened?
3. What should we do then to stop the spread of the disease?

Create a simple awareness message material on prevention of identified
communicable diseases. You can choose thru song, poem, slogan, poster, news,
vlogging or tiktok.
