A. Preliminary Activity
 Review
Last week, with the help of your parents, you have learned how to retell and reenact
stories.
This week, we are going to learn to identify major points and key themes in a selection.

 Motivation

This time, let us read a poem here.

“What Does the Little Birdie Say?”


What does the little birdie say,
In her nest at peep of day?
“Let me fly,” says little birdie,
“Mother, let me fly away.”

“Birdie, rest a little longer,


Until the little wings are stronger.”
So, she rests a little longer,
Then she flies away.

What did the little birdie wants to do?
- The little birdie wants to fly.

Why was the birdie not yet allowed to fly?

- The little birdie is not yet allowed to fly because her mother didn’t allow her.

- Yes

What do you think is major point in the poem which you should remember?

- Asking her mother to let her fly.

B. Presentation of the Lesson


 Lesson Proper

Major points are the main idea or key of a story or a paragraph. The main idea is the major
point of the paragraph. It is the most important thought about the topic. The author can locate the main
idea is usually a sentence and it is usually the first sentence.

The key theme is the main idea of the paragraph. It is what the paragraph is about.

 Activity (Individual/Group)

Direction: Identify the major points and the key theme of the selection by answering the following
questions.

Our brain and all its parts control our daily


lives, from breathing and blinking to helping in
memorizing lessons. It signals the body what to
do in split seconds. It also stores information
from the past which makes remembering easy.
Many people do not realize what the human
brain can do.
