Module 3: KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY (KMT)

Kinetic Molecular Theory – describes the behavior of gases in terms of their particles in motion.
- makes several assumptions about the size, motion, and energy
of particles.

Basic Assumptions of Kinetic Molecular Theory:

1. Gases are composed of very small particles called atoms or molecules.
2. The distance between gas particles is very far that the volume of the gas is mostly
empty space or negligible.
3. There are no repulsive or attractive forces between gas particles.
4. Gas particles are in constant random motion and moving in straight line. The speed are
very fast. Their are no rest for gas.
5. Collisions between molecules or with the walls of the containers are perfectly elastic
( that is , no energy of motion is gained or lost during collision.)
6. The average kinetic energy of the particles is constant or the same.

Questions:
Directions: Write your answer in 1/2 sheet of paper and it will be collected on Wednesday.

7. What happens to the energy of gas molecules when there is collision?
A. Converted to other form of energy C. Energy is gained
B. Energy is conserved D. Energy is lost

II. TRUE OR FALSE. Write true if the statement is true and false if it is false.
1. The average kinetic energy of a molecule is constant.
2. A gas consists of a collection of small particles moving in straight line motion and following Newton’s
Laws.
3. The molecules in a gas do not occupy a volume (that is they are points)
4. There are negligible attractive or repulsive forces between molecules of gases
5. Collisions between molecules are perfectly elastic (that is , no energy is gained nor lost during the
collision.)
