Demand Driven Technology: To provide a sustainable solution for low cost storage units, an integrated pico
hydropower (5 kW) energized cold storage unit of 1.5 tons or higher capacity has been designed and developed
by RuTAG, IIT Roorkee. The 1.5 tons capacity cold storage consumes 1.5-2.0 kW power while the surplus
power is utilized locally for lighting and other livelihood purposes for improving economy of the area.
2 Additional sources of income from pico hydropower system help to recover the cost of the plant in minimum
time period.

Demand Driven Technology: Newly developed Pomegranate seed extraction machine can extract arils
of 50-60 kg pomegranate in one hour as compared to maximum of 10 kg in an hour by using local
technology in Himachal Pradesh. By the employment of this developed machine could help in rapid aril
extraction to prevent rotting of fruits which cannot be processed in time because of unavailability of
3 efficient machines to the local people.

Major Drawback of the Conventional Pomegranate Seed
Development of Aloe-Vera Processing Machine for Natural Cosmetic Multi Products Cost of existing machines is very high.
Aloe-Vera, wild apricot oil and Artemisia along with other natural ingredients are used for preparing natural
cosmetic products. In the pharmaceutical industry Aloe-Vera, has been used for the manufacture of products
such as ointments and preparing cosmetic products like creams, soaps etc.
Aloe Vera processing involves blending, grinding and heating of the juice of Aloe Vera leaf and other
constituents to produce multi products. Extracted juice mixed with other substance to produce a Impact of the Technology
pharmaceutical, cosmetic products. However low-cost single unit at small scale which combines all operations People using the single unit for execute the all
is not readily available locally. So in order to execute all process in single unit and overcome the difficulties, process.
RuTAG, IIT Roorkee has designed and develop Aloe Vera processing machine. Machine is more feasible to be adopted by
marginal farmers.

Demand Driven Technology: Traditionally vegetable hawkers use an open pushcart to carry fruits and vegetables
from wholesale market to residential colonies or rural market to sale them. The vegetables are exposed and sold
during day time when the temperature is high in most of the time which leads to rapid deterioration in the quality
of vegetables and fruits. It is estimated that rate of spoilage of vegetables alone increases 2–3 fold with each 10°C
5 rise in temperature. Due to this routine of daily movement for sale, the hawkers are unable to maintain appropriate
quality of vegetables for more than two days in summer. Thus, most of the perishable unsold for two days old
vegetables are disposed of at throw away price or discarded as waste incurring heavy loss to vendors. So an
attempt has been made to develop a air cooled based mobile preservation unit for preserving the vegetables.
