Plants are organisms that can make their food through a process called photosynthesis. Plants can be
classified in the following ways.
MAJOR DISTINCTIVE FEATURES EXAMPLES
PLANT
GROUP
Flowering Have stems, leaves and roots Sunflower
Plants Produce flowers Mango
(Angiosperms – Reproduce by seeds that are developed in the Guava
seeds that are ovaries (which eventually becomes the fruit)
enclosed in Have vascular tissues that transport water,
fruits) mineral salts and food.
Conifers Have stems, roots and needle-like leaves Pine, Juniper, Spruce
(Gymnosperms Do not produce flowers
– Naked seeds) Reproduce by ‘naked’ seeds that are found in
cones
Have vascular tissues that transport water,
mineral salts and food.
Ferns Have stems, roots and leaves that are divided Rabbit’s foot fern
into leaflets Stag’s horn fern
Do not produce flowers Bird’s nest fern
Reproduce by ‘spores’ which are found on
the underside of the leaf
Have vascular tissues that transport water,
mineral salts and food.
Mosses Have simple stems, no true roots and tiny Haircup moss
leaves White moss
Do not produce flowers
Reproduce by ‘spores’ found in capsules
Do not have vascular tissues
Live in damp places
