Tongue
• The mucous membrane consists of stratified squamous epithelium
and the underlying lamina propria.
• Made up of skeletal muscle running in various directions.
Tongue
Lingual papillae
Tongue
Oesophagus
• Mucosa comprising of nonkeratinised stratified squamous epithelium
supported by lamina propria and muscularis mucosa.
• Muscularis externa made up of sk muscle or smooth muscle
depending on the level of section.
Sk muscle- in upper one third
Sk & smooth muscle- in middle one third
Smooth muscle – in lower one third
Oesophagus
Stomach
• Gastric pits lined by simple columnar epithelium.
• Presence of glands in lamina propria.
• Muscularis externa showing three layers of smooth muscle.( Inner
oblique, middle circular and outer longitudinal)
Stomach
Stomach
Duodenum
• Intestinal villi lined by simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells
• Crypts of lieberkuhn ( intestinal glands), connective tissue like
fibroblasts, Mast cells, plasma cells in the lamina propria
• Presence of Brunner’s gland in submucosa
Duodenum
Jejunum
• Mucosa showing villi and Crypts of lieberkuhn in lamina propria
• Submucosa is devoid of glands and Peyer’s patches.contains only
loose areolar connective tissue and blood vessels.
Jejunum
Jejunum
Ileum
• Mucosa showing villi and Crypts of lieberkuhn in the lamina propria.
The muscularis mucos is often disrupted due to penetration of Peyer’s
patches into the lamina propria.
• The submucosa contains aggregation of lymphoid follicle i.e Peyer’s
patches.
Ileum
Ileum
Large Gut
• Absence of villi
• The surface of mucosa and the glands/ crypts are lined by Columnar
epithelium
• Presence of numerous goblet cells
• Prominent muscularis externa
Large Gut
Large Gut
• Cl - crypts of Lieberkuhn
• 1.Columnar epi with goblet cells
• 2.Lamina propria
• 3.Muscularis mucosa
• 4. Submucosa
Appendix
• Mucosa is lined by simple columnar epithelium
• Few crypts of lieberkuhn
• Lymphoid follicles in lamina propria
Appendix
Liver
• Hexagonal hepatic lobules with central vein in the centre and
radiating plates of hepatocytes ( darkly stained) separated by
sinusoids ( lightly stained)
• Each portal tract( present at the angle of lobules) contains three
structures (portal triad) – branches of portal vein, hepatic artery,
hepatic ductule supported by connective tissue.
Liver
Pancreas
• Presence of darkly stained serous acini
• Presence of lightly stained islets of Langerhans
• Presence of centroacinar cells
Pancreas
Gallbladder
• Mucosa is thrown into folds and lined by Simple columnar epithelium.
• Lamina propria is rich in elastic fibres & blood vessels
• Absence of muscularis mucosa and submucosa
• It has from inner to outer three coats
• Mucosa, fibromuscular layer and serosa and serosa/ adventitia
Gallbladder
• 1. Tall columnar cells
• 2. Lamina propria
• 3.middle fibromuscular layer
• 4. Serosa
• C – crypts in lamina propria
