EMERGENCIES

MOB
1. Release Lifebuoy with light and smoke signal on side that person
has fallen overboard and Hail Man overboard.
2. Activate MOB mark on GPS and ECDIS
3. Engage hand steering ,Hardover course towards the side of the
person in the water.
( If in TSS , alter course towards the side of person and enter
Inshore traffic zone/Separation Line accordingly)
( If in Narrow channel stop the vessel )
4. Man overboard alarm : three prolonged blasts on ship whistle.
5. Inform master/ER and VTS(if in TSS) and Post extra lookout
6. Commence recovery manoeuvre
7. Hoist oscar flag
8. Prepare for recovery of person on water and Rescue boat must
contain SART(RV) , walkie talkie and TPA (Rescue boat and
embarkation ladder)
9. Broadcast distress message if appropriate( If survivor is in sight and
can be rescued then no distress message)
10. Engines on standby.
11. Maintain Log/record of event and decision.

STRANDING/GROUNDING
1. Stop Engines
2. Inform master / engine room/ Inform VTS or port authority, as
appropriate
3. Sound general emergency alarms.
4. All crew to be mustered at muster station.
5. Exhibit Aground lights , shapes and sound signals and change
AIS status.
6. Close watertight doors and automatic fire doors.
7. Access the damage (damage control procedure)and check for
pollution.
8. Take sounding of Bilges and WBT and take soundings around
the ship and assess the sea bed.
9. Check the tide and currents and check for the next high tide.
10. Broadcast urgency message
11. Maintain log/Record of events and decisions.
12. Prepare for refloat by reducing draught / deballasting tanks.

FIRE (At Sea)


1. Call Master
2. Raise the fire alarm and inform the location of fire
detected from the fire panel in the PA system.
3. Shut down the ventilation system.
4. Reduce speed and manoeuvre so as to minimise the
effect of wind.
5. Muster all crew at fire control station and take head
count.
6. Conduct fire control procedures and Do duties as per
Muster list.
7. Assist the Master to Establish communication with the
Emergency team.
8. Depending upon the situation Transmit Urgency or
Distress message as appropriate.
9. Maintain log and record of events.
FIRE(Galley)
1. Shout 'Fire in the Galley'

2. Sound Fire alarm by activating through the nearest call point.

3. Announce the location of fire via PA System.

Muster crew at fire control station , take headcount and do duties as per
responsibilities.

4. The person who detects the fire, Shutdown the ventilation system and
electrical supply for the Galley.

5. The use of blankets, provided as part of fire fighting equipment for the
galley, for the purpose of smothering the fire.

Do boundary cooling from outside.

6. If the cause is an electric fire, the action should be

● Switch off power supply to the equipment, or if required to the entire


galley.
● Use an appropriate extinguisher either a CO2 or a Dry Chemical
Powder.

7. If it is liquid on fire, oil or cooking fat- a Wet chemical extinguisher


should be used.

8. If oily rags are on fire, any extinguisher or water would be used.

9. If fire cannot be tackled within the five minutes then

● Evacuate all persons from the galley.


● Seal off all sources of inlet of air - portholes, entrance door etc.
● Use a water spray through a porthole or an entrance door.
● Some of vessel's provided with fixed CO2 for Galley also, use as
per Master instruction.
● Effect boundary cooling if necessary.

10. Appropriate entries must be made in the ship's logbook.

11. The master would make an appropriate entry in the official logbook.

FIRE (E/R)
1. Raise the fire alarm and shout fire.

2. Inform Master.

3. Announce the location of the fire in the PA system.

4.Close all ventilation/ fire damper and other openings(If fire is small try
to extinguish it with a fire extinguisher).

5. Isolate electrical units.

6.Muster all crew and respond as per duty.

7. If fire is uncontrollable , Display NUC lights and shapes.

8.Steer vessel away from traffic/coast , navigational hazards and shallow


depth.

9.Inform VTS and other vsls in vicinity.(TSS/NC)

10.Broadcast Distress/urgency message as needed.(if uncontrollable fire


in case of tug assistance broadcast urgency message)

11.Stop Engines in consultation with the Bridge Team. Activate fuel


trips, emergency stops, etc, as required.(open sea) and Evacuate ER.

12. Prepare to release CO2 , and release only on Master decision.

13. Log down the event and save VDR recording.

MAIN ENGINE FAILURE(TSS)


1. Inform Master / ER / VTS( if in TSS and/or Narrow channel)
2. Take on hand steering and manoeuvre the ship away from vessels
in vicinity or danger or Enter inshore traffic zone./ verify position
more frequently
3. Change lights to NUC light and shape.
4. Change AIS status
5. Check for positions of vessel in vicinity and Check for Navigational
hazards in vicinity
6. Prepare for anchoring if water depth and conditions are appropriate
7. Broadcast safety or urgency message as appropriate
8. Inform company.
9. Maintain log and record of Events and VDR backup
10. Check Weather conditions

GPS FAILURE
1. Inform Master
2. Switch to 2nd GPS.
3. ECDIS will go on DR mode or EP mode.
4. Position fixing to be done more frequently
5. Post extra Lookout
6. Radar will not work on ground stabilized mode
7. AIS will not give CPA and TCPA, it will not transmit Course and
speed.
8. Insert position manually on GMDSS console.
9. Reduce speed and inform Company.
10. Check the manual for troubleshooting.
11. Maintain log and events.

GYRO FAILURE
1. Inform master.
2. Switch to 2nd Gyro if available
3. Ecdis will go to DR mode or EP mode.
4. Change over to hand steering with magnetic compass. Apply error
to magnetic compass heading.
5. Enter heading manually to Radar/Arpa and Ecdis
6. Plot position more frequently to confirm CMG
7. In coastal waters, make use of Parallel indexing to keep vessel on
track.
8. Reduce speed if necessary
9. Maintain the record of all events
10. Check the instruction manual for troubleshooting.

COLLISION
1. Stop Engine /Manoeuvre to minimize Damage.
2. Call the master/Engine room.
3. Sound general emergency alarm.
4. All crew to be mustered at muster station.
5. Close watertight doors and automatic fire doors.
6. Conduct damage control procedures.
7. Broadcast Distress message.
8. Establish communication with other vessels.
9. Evaluate the situation/access the damage,check for pollution and
take soundings of tanks.
10. Inform VTS and other ships nearby
11. Give first aid to the injured person.
12. Switch on deck lights
13. Offer assistance to other vessels.
14. Preserve VDR records and ECDIS records.
15. Maintain a log of events.

COLLISION WITH FISHING VESSEL


1. STOP ENGINE/ Manoeuvre to minimise damage.
2. Inform master / ER / VTS
3. Sound general emergency alarm
4. Close watertight doors and automatic fire doors.
5. Conduct damage control procedures.
6. Broadcast Distress relay message.
7. Evaluate the situation/access the damage,check for pollution and
take soundings of tanks.
8. Establish communication with other vessel.
9. Offer assistance to other vessel.
10. Prepare for Rescue boat and embarkation ladder.
11. Give first aid to injured persons
12. Preserve VDR records and ECDIS records.
13. Maintain a log of events.

STEERING FAILURE
1. Call master
2. Switch to second/emergency steering, if not working switch to hand
steering, if not working switch to NFU.
3. Inform Engine room.
4. Stop engine and manoeuvre as appropriate or TAWO.
5. Display light and shape of NUC and change AIS status
6. Inform VTS and other vessels in vicinity .
7. Check position of vessels in the vicinity and check for navigational
hazards.
8. Broadcast safety message.
9. If tug assistance is required then broadcast urgency message.
10. Prepare for anchoring if depth prefers as per guideline of vts.
11. Take VDR backup.
12. Maintain log/record of events.
13. Do troubleshooting.

ABANDON SHIP
1. Raise general emergency alarm and verbal order by master.
2. Send distress alert.
3. Muster at muster station or boat station
4. Collect and Prepare EPIRB , SART , SOLAS walkie talkies
,logbooks, and extra ration and warm clothes.
5. Head count taken and all accounted for.
6. Instruct them to wear life jacket and Immersion suit as appropriate
7. Prepare lifeboat for launch
8. Embark and launch LSA.
9. Ensure to be in close proximity to the ship for being Rescued.
10. Activate EPIRB and SART.

DISTRESS FLARE SEEN ON STBD BOW


1. Take the bearing of the flare.
2. Inform master/notice engine room and prepare for manoeuvre.
3. Check for distress signals or messages received.
4. Alter course towards the distress signal
5. Post extra lookout.
6. Prepare a rescue boat and embarkation ladder.
7. Commence search for survival
8. Relay the distress alert to CRS and other vessels in vicinity..
9. Log down event.

RUDDER STUCK IN TSS


1. Inform Master/ ER/ VTS(if in TSS/ narrow channel).
2. Switch on other motor and try out rudder , if no response check
Rudder angle indicator , if not ok, Take hand steering and try out
rudder, if no response ,Try with NFU , if no response
3. Exhibit NUC light and shape
4. After consulting master reduce speed/ stop engines
5. Send Safety message
6. If in a narrow channel/ TSS , prepare and proceed to drop anchor.
7. Record all events.

DRAGGING ANCHOR :
1. Call master
2. Switch on NUC lights, off anchor lights , Hoist Yankee flag.
3. Inform anchor party and Pay out more cable.
4. Inform Engine room and prepare for manoeuvering.
5. Inform VTS and other vessels in vicinity.
6. Heave up anchor and ask VTS for a new anchoring position.
7. Record in log book.
