Filippa Shorts

Simple merino shorts with elastic waist

Hook: 4 mm
Yarn: Merino blend, Sport, yardage: 100 g = 420 m. Brand: Scheepjes Our
Tribe. For my shorts I sued 128 grams (my shorts measured: 94 cm in
circumference, 60 cm in waist, 32 cm in length).
+ 1 piece of elastic approx. 0,5 cm wide.
Gauge: 10 cm = 18 stitches x 11 rows
Stitches: Double crochet (dc), single crochet (dc), chains (ch), slip stitch
(ss)
Size: The shorts are made after your hip, waist and crotch measurements
and how long you want them to be.
Process:
The shorts are made from the waist down. They consist of two identical
panels which are slip stitched together in the end.
In the end you crochet an edge with elastic inside.
THE MEASUREMENTS YOU'LL NEED
1) Hip circumference (measure over your bottom) – 10 cm / 2
2) From waist to crotch (ie. how high waisted you want them to be)
Measure over your bottom, subtract 5 cm. You can also measure the front
+ back and divide by 2 to find the average – this is because the panels are
identical but you will most likely be bigger on the back than the front!
3) Measurement 1) / 4 / 2 – 5 cm
4) From crotch down the thigh (the short leg length)
5) Waist circumference (for the elastic – remember to stretch the elastic)

My example:
1) 100 cm – 10 cm = 90 cm / 2 = 45 cm
2) 26 cm – 5 = 21 cm
3) 100 / 4 = 25 / 2 = 12,5 - 5 = 7,5 ~ 8 cm
4) 11 cm
5) 70 cm

1) I made 89 dc, this measured 45 cm

2) Then I made 21 rows, this measure 21 cm in height.
3) I crocheted 7 extra stitches in each side which measured 4 cm each – 8
cm in total.
4) Then I made rows until I had 12 rows – this measured 11 cm.
5) Then I cut a piece of elastic. When I stretched it, it measured 70 cm.

If you want the shorts to fit more loosely, you can avoid subtracting 5 or
10 cm from the measurements.

PANELS
Row 1:
Start by making a chainless foundation with dc so you have measurements
1. You can also just crochet chains.
Row 2- xx: Crochet back and forth in rows until you have measurements 2.
After every row you ch 2 – this counts as the first stitch.

Increase: In the opposite corner of the row: insert hook with 1 ss and the
number of chains you need to get measurement 3. Measure on the panel
you've made so far, to find out how many stitches you need to make. Break
off the yarn (picture A).

Go back to where you left off, and crochet the same number of ch + 3 ch
(picture B). Make the first dc in the 5th ch from the hook (picture C).
Continue making dc over the row and over the ch in the other side – this
way you increase in each side of the row.

Crochet back and forth like before (picture E).

Before breaking off the yarn you crochet together the short leg with slip
stitches – 2 stitches per row (picture F).

Now make one more panel the same way.

JOIN THE PANELS

The panels are going to be joined like you see on picture G.
To make this easy: insert one panel into the other, so the right sides of the
panels touch each other, and the wrong side is facing you (picture H)
Now slip stitch from one side to the other – 2 ss per row – 1 ss per dc.

Take a piece of elastic, abou 0,5 cm wide, stretch it until it reaches your
waist measurement. Tie a double knot on it to connect to a ring.

Insert hook in the waist edge (picture I) with 1 ss.

Place the elastic behind the stitches while you loosely sc around the elastic
and around the whole short opening (picture J). Pull the elastic as you go.
Finish with 1 ss in the 1st sc, break off the yarn.

Now you can weave in the ends and cosy up in your handmade shorts!
