COMPUTER-AIDED INSTRUCTION

and DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN CLASSROOM

Dr. Ricardo Reyes III, DDM, LPT, PhD

History of Computer:

The first computer that resembled the modern machines we see today was invented by Charles
Babbage between 1833 and 1871.

Father of Computer – Charles Babbage:

An English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the
concept of a programmable computer. He was born Dec 26, 1791 and died Oct 18, 1871.
5 Ways to Engage Students to use Computer

1. Incorporate New Technology

2. Promote Active Learning
3. Play Educational Games
4. Create Relatable Situations and Examples
5. Try blended learning

COMPUTER-AIDED INSTRUCTION
● Computer-aided instruction (CAI), also known as
computer-assisted instruction, is an educational
approach that utilizes computer software and
technology to assist in the delivery of instructional
materials.
● It involves the use of computer programs and
applications to enhance the learning process,
providing students with interactive and multimedia
content.

Types of Computer Aided Instruction

1. Drill-and-practice: Drill and practice provide opportunities or students to repeatedly practice

the skills that have previously been presented and that further practice is necessary for
mastery.

2. Tutorial activity: includes both the presentation of information and its extension into different
forms of work, including drill and practice, games, and simulation.

3. Game software: often creates a contest to achieve the highest score and either beat others or
beat the computer.

4. Simulation software: can provide an approximation of reality that does not require the
expense of real life or its risks.

5. Discovery approach: provides a large database of information specific to a course or content

area and challenges the learner to analyze, compare, and evaluate based on their explorations
of the data.

6. Problem Solving: This approach helps children develop specific problem solving skills and
strategies.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Digital Technology - Digital technology refers to the use

of electronic devices, systems, and software to process
and transmit information in the form of binary code (0s and
1s). It encompasses a wide range of technologies and
tools that rely on digital data and electronic signals for
various purposes, such as communication, computation,
storage, and automation. In essence, it's the technology
that operates using digital data and electronic
components.

SOCIAL MEDIA – Social media is a way for people to use the internet to connect, share pictures,
videos, and thoughts, and interact with friends, family, and even strangers. It's like a big online
community where you can post, like, comment, and chat with others.

COMPUTER – A computer is an electronic machine that can process and store information, perform
various tasks, and run programs. It's like a versatile, electronic brain that can do math, play games,
browse the web, and much more.

AUGMENTED REALITY – Augmented reality (AR) is when you use technology, like a smartphone or
special glasses, to add computer-generated images, information, or experiences on top of the real
world you see. It's like a mix of the real world and digital elements to enhance what you perceive.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is when computers and machines are made
to think and learn like humans.

Digital Technologies in the Classroom

1. Computer and Laptops: Computers and laptops in the classroom serve as powerful tools
that bring a range of advantages to the learning environment. These devices are like electronic
workstations that help students and teachers access information quickly and efficiently. In the
classroom, they function as versatile hubs for various educational activities. Students can use
them to research, complete assignments, and engage with interactive learning materials.
Teachers benefit by incorporating multimedia elements, educational software, and digital
resources into their lessons, making the content more engaging and diverse.
2. Tablets and Smartphones: The use of tablets and smartphones in the classroom offers
significant advantages by providing portable and versatile tools for both students and teachers.
These devices serve various functions, such as easy access to educational apps, interactive
learning materials, and digital textbooks. Tablets and smartphones enable personalized
learning experiences, allowing students to progress at their own pace.

3. Interactive Whiteboards: Interactive whiteboards bring a host of advantages to the

classroom, making learning more engaging and interactive. These boards serve as large
touch-sensitive displays, allowing teachers to present information in a dynamic and visually
stimulating way. With the ability to interact directly with the content, educators can draw,
annotate, and manipulate images, fostering a hands-on learning experience.

4. Educational Software: Educational software in the classroom provides a range of benefits,

making learning more interactive and effective. This software serves as digital tools designed
to support and enhance educational activities. It can offer personalized learning experiences,
adapting to individual student needs and providing targeted practice in various subjects.

Examples:

5. Learning Management System (LMS): A Learning Management System (LMS) is like a

digital hub for education, providing a central platform for managing and delivering learning
content. The advantage of using an LMS in the classroom is its ability to organize, track, and
streamline the learning process. It serves as a virtual space where teachers can upload
resources, assignments, and assessments, making them easily accessible to students.

Examples:
6. Online Educational Resource: Online education resources refer to digital tools and
materials that support learning in the classroom. The advantage of using these resources is
that they provide a wealth of information and interactive content accessible through the
internet. These resources include educational websites, videos, interactive simulations, and
online textbooks. They offer flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and
providing additional support for various subjects.

Examples:

7. Assessment and Testing Software: Assessment and testing software are digital tools
designed to streamline the evaluation process in the classroom. The advantage of using these
tools lies in their ability to efficiently administer, grade, and analyze assessments. Teachers
can create quizzes, exams, and assignments digitally, saving time and reducing paperwork.
