LESSON PROPER: I am a Social Being
I am a Social Being
A social being is a creature that interacts regularly with others and cooperates with others to achieve
common goals. We humans are social beings we share ideas that allow us to match each other’s
emotions unconsciously and immediately. We leak emotions to each other. We anticipate and mirror to
each other movements when we’re in sympathy or agreement with one another--- when we’re on the
same side.
We realize our need to belong or to be part of a group. We know that we are not meant to be alone. We
were born into family, a community. This is the reason that we feel strange when we do not have
companions. With the presence of companions, we become whole and we develop as individuals within
a community.
Aristotle the legendary Greek philosopher said,” Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is
unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is
something that precedes the individual.”Man cannot live alone. He must satisfy certain natural basic
needs in order to survive. He has to enter into relationships with his fellowmen for living a life.
Society refers to:
1. An enduring and cooperating social group whose members have developed organized patterns
of relationships through interactions with one another; or
2. A community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, and
collective activities and interests (Merriam- Webster Dictionary).
SELF AND SOCIETY
Self and Society have a very close relationship. Society has customs and regulations, and certain rules
that people need to follow. Self also can have these traits and this is why they are similar to each other.
Self can contribute to society and society can contribute to self. Self can contribute many things to
society like what you believe in and you’re ethnicity. Society can contribute to yourself by teaching you
certain sayings, belief etc.
We were born without knowledge of culture. Our parents, teachers, and other mentors gradually
introduce us to culture toward our understanding of social life. This general process of acquiring culture
is called socialization. In sociology, socialization is the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies
of society. Socialization encompasses both learning and teaching and is thus “the means by which social
and cultural continuity are attained”. As persons born into different types of society, we share the
language, culture, tradition, and behavior with the people of the place where we live. We take on the
ways of our society. However, more than the kind of clothes or kind of food in our respective
communities, our values as individuals are influenced by our society to large extent.
The process of socialization is continuous. As we grow older and wiser, we are able to learn and acquire
values that will mold us into persons of strong moral character. Even if we lived in an environment of
violence and rejection, we have capability to break the cycle of aggression and become well-mannered
individuals.
