Biodiversity Field Coordinator

Support for Sinarmas PKM – Jambi Project

Backgrounds

PT SMART Tbk, one of the largest national palm oil producers, is advancing their sustainable practices
beyond compliance through their No Deforestation No Peat Exploitation (NDPE) commitment by
collaborating with their buyers to implement this innovative project in Jambi. This project will be
implemented by one of their subsidiaries in Jambi, PT PKM, with the main objective being to restore
degraded peatlands and increase local awareness of the important role of peat ecosystems while
improving community livelihoods.

This project seeks to rejuvenate degraded peatland ecosystems by implementing sustainable land use
practices, and emphasizing reforestation. Through comprehensive community involvement, this
initiative also seeks to strengthen understanding of the importance of peatlands in mitigating climate
change while empowering local communities to build and improve sustainable livelihoods. The main
objectives of this project are: (1) restore and maintain ± 2,100 Ha of degraded peatland
(environmental services); (2) secure the restored area and its surroundings from fire and
deforestation; (3) increasing public awareness of the importance of the existence of peat ecosystems;
and (4) supporting community economic empowerment projects. Lastly, the peat restoration project
aims to drive transformative change in the palm oil supply chain. This project was developed based
on private sector “best practice” commitments that are in line with provincial and national agendas
for restoring peatlands.

forest conservation projects, proposes to provide strategic input to the operations of peat restoration
