9.1 Hydraulic system description


9.1.1 Hydraulic system overview
The following description is based on the hydraulic diagram with the
drawing number 656.49727.768.
The machine‘s hydraulic system is an open circuit system. The system
consists of independent hydraulic circuits.
Used in the system is a pump combination which is mounted outside of the
hydraulic tank. The pumps are driven by an electric-motor. The suction
lines for these pumps can be individually shut off by butterfly valves to
provide a change of a pump without draining the hydraulic oil in the tank.

The hydraulic power back comprises the hydraulic tank, the hydraulic
pumps, the electric motor for the pumps, hydraulic filters and monitoring
devices.

• Operating pressure,
• Oil temperature,
• Fluid viscosity,

9.1.5 Hydraulic tank


The hydraulic tank is of welded design which considered the special
characteristics of fluid power technical. The hydraulic tank has to
accomplish the following numerous tasks.
• Holding the hydraulic fluid
• Cooling (heat radiation)
• Separation of air
• Settling of impurities

The machine is equipped with an electrical driven hydraulic oil filing pump
as shown in the following illustration.

9.1.6 Hydraulic fluid


Operate the machine with mineral oil of type HLP, according to DIN 51524,
part 2 or type HLVP, according to DIN 51524, part 3.
Note! When operating the machine in an environment that could pose a fire
hazard, it is necessary to consider using a flame resistant hydraulic
fluid.
Whether or not a fire hazard exists must be determined by the
operator (for example, in the course of a risk analysis) or is specified
by national regulations.

It is possible to have different limitations regarding medium temperature


and operating pressure based on the medium type. Some medium types
are specified by national regulations. Contact Sandvik if you are unsure
which medium type to use.
For the correct hydraulic fluid refer to "Chapter - Lubricants and capacities"
Note! The quality, purity and operating viscosity of the hydraulic medium is
of vital importance for the working reliability, performance and life
span of the machine.

9.1.7 Filtering
Filtering of the hydraulic fluid takes place in full stream and collects all
return quantities coming from the control valves. All return flow is collected
by a return manifold and directed via the heat exchanger and the return line
filter before entering the hydraulic tank.
Additional to the return line filtration a bypass filtration system for additional
fine filtration of the hydraulic fluid is mounted.
The venting of the hydraulic reservoir is achieved by a breather filter.

Note! Regular maintenance of all hydraulic filters is required for the proper
function of the machine hydraulics.

9.1.8 Monitoring of pressure, temperature and oil level

Pressure gauges
For monitoring the hydraulic system, pressure gauges are mounted on the
machine. The pressure gauges monitor the pressures in the main circuits
(pump pressure).
The checking points for the individual main circuits are arranged as shown
in the hydraulic circuit. One pressure gauge for each pump (hydraulic
circuit).
By means of these checking points eventual defects in the hydraulic system
can be detected more easily and quickly.

Level - and temperature control


The hydraulic system is fitted with an oil / level temperature switch in the
hydraulic tank, this switch monitors the temperature of the hydraulic oil and
the oil level in the tank.

If the temperature of the oil reaches 80°Celsius the machine will shut down
and the machine screen will display a warning message. At 65° Celsius a
prewarning signal will displayed. The machine cannot be restarted until the
oil temperature has dropped below the trip temperature.
Additional a temperature gauge is installed at the hydraulic tank.
The following illustration shows the electrical temperature sensor. The
sensor is mounted at the hydraulic tank. The machine display inside the
operators cabin shows the hydraulic oil temperature measured by this
sensor. This sensor is only for measuring the temperature for the
visualisation.

Circuit 1 and 2 are fed with hydraulic energy by means of variable axial
piston pumps.
The axial piston pumps are automatically pressure- and flow controlled, i.e.
it only produces the amount of hydraulic energy as actually being used by a
consumer. The hydraulic – control valves are operated through directly
mounted electrical pilot valves and are from their structure proportional
control valves with load pressure feedback to the variable displacement
pump (LOAD - SENSING).

Flow control and pressure control of axial piston pumps


The cross-section of the opening of each valve corresponds to a certain oil
flow rate through the valve. The difference of pressure results from the fed
back to the variable displacement pump, which delivers automatically the
required flow rate.
When reaching the maximum system pressure adjusted at the pressure
controller, the pump swivels automatically towards to minimum volume by
maintaining the system pressure.

Circuit 3, 4 and 5 are supplied with hydraulic energy by gear pumps with
steady displacement.

Track drive motor


Each track drive motor consists of the following main components:

Track drive motor


1 Axial piston variable displacement motors (Nominal size 0.160
l/rev).
The track drive motors (left and right) are equipped with a two point
control device for speed change.
2 Multiple disk brake
Both track drives are equipped with multiple disk brakes, which are
released at the same time during start-up of the track drives. The
disk brakes are mounted inside the track drives.
3 Track drive gear box

Speed control for track drives


Slow speed
The flow volume of the variable pump is led over the valve elements of the
control block for the track drive to the drive motors of the tracks. The drive
motors are thereby set to maximum displacement (0.160 l/rev), i.e. they can
deliver their maximum torque.
Fast speed
Similar to „slow“ speed, for the fast speed the flow volume of the variable
pump is led over the valve elements of the control block for the track drive
to the drive motors of the tracks. But the drive motors are set towards to
reduced displacement volume (~ 0.080 l/rev) through actuation of the pilot
directional control valve in the operators cabin. Their number of revolutions
is thereby increased; the delivered torque however, is proportionally
reduced.

Lubrication (grease) pump drive


In standard design the machine is equipped with two lubrication pumps
mounted on the left and right side of the turret. Each lubrication pump drive
consists of the following main components:

Lubrication (grease) pump drive


1 Flow control valve
The number of revolutions for the lubrication pump drive is set by
means of the flow control valve. Standard setting is 3 l/min.
2 Hydraulic drive motor
The lubricating pump is driven by a hydraulic geromotor. With the
standard setting of the flow control valve (3 l/min), the motor
reaches approx. 52 rpm. This number of revolutions results in
approx. 2 supplying strokes per minute of each grease pump
element.

9.2 Hydraulic system components


9.2.1 General hydraulic system components

Generally each hydraulic circuit consists of the following components:


• Hydraulic pump(s)
• Primary - pressure relief valve(s)
• Control block(s) for the supply of the respective consumer unit(s)
• Actuator units (hydraulic motor(s), cylinders etc.)
• According to their function, the following components are arranged at the
consumer:
- Non return valves
- Secondary pressure relief valves
- Counterbalance (brake) valves
• Required supply and drain lines
• Required instruments (pressure and temperature indicators, level
monitoring system)

9.2.2 General hydraulic system components troubleshooting


Any failure or abnormal events which personnel observe/identify during
operation must be rectified immediately. The causes must be clarified
clearly and rectified prior to re-commissioning. Temporary rectification of a
failure, e.g. decommissioning of safety devices (thermostats, level
monitoring system, filter, etc.) is not permitted.
Failures in the hydraulic system are often caused by unjustified and
unnecessary readjustment of the pressure relief and throttle valves.
Generally, more damage is caused due to this and troubleshooting is often
noticeably more complicated.
Specific and rapid localization of a failure essentially requires a systematic
procedure. Pre-requisite for systematic troubleshooting is the detailed
knowledge of the defective hydraulic circuit (the applicable circuit diagram
must be available) as well as its implementation as part of the entire
hydraulic system.
Failures of the components (consumer) manifest themselves as
follows:
• Component does not react at all
• Component reacts with insufficient speed
• Component reacts with insufficient power
Note! Always have the hydraulic schematic drawing to hand when
troubleshooting. Systematic troubleshooting must always be carried
out from the pump through all components to the consumer unit, or
vice versa from the consumer unit to the pump.

9.2.3 Commissioning of variable pumps


All components, especially pumps and motors need a certain starting up
procedure before being charged with maximum pressure. It is therefore
very important during commissioning or after a pump failure and a
subsequent pump exchange to proceed according to the following
instructions, otherwise the pump will again fail to operate after a short
period of time.

Start-up and running-in


STARTING UP WITHOUT FILLING UP THE PUMP HOUSING WITH OIL
CAN DAMAGE OR EVEN DESTROY THE PUMP.
NOTICE Fill pump housing via drain port until the case is completely filled
with hydraulic fluid. Reconnect the drain line after filling.

• Make sure the pumps are mounted without tension to the carrier flange of
the hydraulic tank.
• Open all butterfly valves in the suction lines and fill hydraulic tank to the
prescribed level by using the filler port.
• Check the suction lines / connections for leaks to prevent damage to the
pumps during start-up.
• Check for proper attachment of the pressure, drain and control hoses/
pipes.
• Check the oil level during the start-up period to make sure the level does
not drop below minimum.
• Observe the oil temperature during start-up period.
• Observe specific instructions for components.
• Check for the right direction of rotation during start-up.

Running-in the hydraulic components in idle


HIGH TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE CAN DAMAGE THE PUMP.
Before starting the pumps, special attention has to be paid to the oil
NOTICE temperature. It must not exceed the temperature of the pump itself
by more than 25°C. Until reaching the respective temperature the
pump must only be activated for short periods (1 to 2 sec).

When the pump runs smooth, operate the system only with partial load for
about 0.5 hrs. Afterwards the system can be used with full load. The flow-
and pressure controller must be set as shown in the hydraulic diagram.

Check pump direction of rotation


DAMAGE TO THE HYDRAULIC PUMPS DUE TO WRONG DIRECTION
OF ROTATION.
Running the hydraulic pumps at nominal speed in the wrong
NOTICE direction for only a few seconds, can already cause severe damage
or even destroy it. Check direction of rotation during start-up as
described below.

For commissioning of the equipment and every time the electric power
supply had to be disconnected, make sure that the electric motor of the
hydraulic power pack rotates in the correct direction – to the right. “To the
right” means that the hydraulic pump, seen from the side of the pump drive
shaft, must rotate clockwise.
The correct direction can be checked by looking at rotating components
within the line of vision (coupling - inspection hole, fan, etc.) while switching
on the system. For this the machine is equipped with inspection holes.
Make sure to start pump motor for a short time only and check direction of
rotation with a light, while the pump motor runs out.
When direction of rotation is correct, repeatedly switch on pump motor for
short intervals to facilitate the de-aeration of the system.
