Exercise No. 1.6 Revision 2 Edition 08.09.2020
GOLINSKIS
Title Displacement in salt water . Relative density.
Reference Ship Stability Duration 20 min
Responsibility Form is used by trainee

OBJECTIVE OF EXERCISE:
Understand and be able to calculate ships summer displacement in salt water.

EXERCISE DESCRIPTION:

In this exercise you can use if necessary this formula:

∆= Vxρ

The ship is floating in salt water on an even keel and has the following data:

LBP 170.0 mtr

Breadth 22.0 mtr
Depth 14.0 mtr
Draft 7.5 mtr
Cb 0.75

Find the cargo to discharge so that the ship will float at the same draft in fresh water.
see calculation below:
1. Initial displacement in SW:
Length x breadth x draft x Cb x density
170 x 22 x 7.5 x 0.75 x 1.025 = 21563,44
2. New displ in FW:
(𝐹𝑊 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦)/(𝑆𝑊 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦)
Initial displacement in SW x

1/1.025
21563,44 x =21037,5

3. Amount cargo to discharge:

Initial displ - new displ
21563,44-21037,5=525,94 tonnes
