Cogeneration
Need of cogeneration:
Cogeneration
Principle of cogeneration

24
= 60𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡
0.40

34
= 40 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡
0.85

24 + 34
= 40 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑢𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡
0.85

Total saving of 10 units

Reciprocating engine cogeneration system:
Classification of cogeneration
• Topping cycle: The fuel is first used to produced power and then thermal
energy, which is by product of the cycle and is used to satisfy the process
heat or other thermal heat or other thermal requirements.

• Topping cycle is most popular and widely used method

• Bottoming cycle: The primary fuel produces the high thermal energy and
heat rejected by the processes is used to generate electricity through
recovery boiler and a turbine generator
Classification of cogeneration
• Topping cycle:
• In case of topping cycle the fuel
firstly used to produce the
electricity and then used for
processing heating
• Hence called as topping cycle
• Topping cycle are more famous
• Four types are there Figure1

shown in figure 4 of Gas turbine
Classification of cogeneration
• Bottoming Cycle:

• Primary cycle produces the

temperature thermal energy and
the heat rejected form the
process is used to generate
electrical power using recovery
boiler and turbine generator

• Bottoming cycles are suitable for

the manufacturing processes that
require heat at higher
temperatures example are
furnaces

• Commercial waste heat recovery
devices

• Recuperator
• It is a device in which the heat
exchange takes places between the
flue gases and the air through metallic
or ceramics walls
• Tube carry the air for combustion and
surrounding the tube carry the flue
