Issue Description
At one Airline, a short circuit was found in the IDG harness connector B between the contact 5 and
the contactor 8. Some Airlines also experienced "IDG PMG FAULT" message as a result of chafing
in the backshell of the IDG connector.
Consequence
IDG connector backshell chafing may result in "GEN X FAULT E/W".
Investigation Status
PW have identified this problem and a modification has been defined to avoid chafing inside the
backshell.
Mitigation / Interim Plan
Trouble shooting procedures linked to the failure of IDG controls have been revised to introduce
the harness WC1 as a possible cause. A note indicating the risk of chafing in the connector
backshell and giving the possibility to remove the harness to facilitate the repair has been added
in the TSM revision dated JAN 2000.
Maintenance Information
In case of chafing in the above mentioned connector backshells, affected conductor wires must be
replaced as per CMM procedures.
Repercussion on A/C Dispatch
Refer to MMEL 24-22-01
Solution
P&W has defined a modification that introduces a viton rubber boot inside the harness WC1
connector backshells ( 4000XU-A, -B, -C) to protect them from chafing. Service Bulletin PW4G-
100-73-27 introducing this modification was released on December 24, 2002.
