Q1. What were the drivers of taking up such a large scale IS-enable process
redesign at PHS?
Ans 1. There are some drivers which defines the redesigning of PHS which are as
follows:
Overall, with these drivers and many more IS enabled process will be able to
modernize their operations on a larger scale and will be able to improve
patient care.
Q2. Which categories of information systems that you have studied in this course
(MIS) have been implemented at PHS for transforming the organizational
processes? Explain how these systems were benefitting PHS.
1. Data Warehouses: Collection of integrated data from various sources used for
reporting and data analysis.
i) PHS had the capability to integrate digital records of all the information about a
given patient over a period of time, including medical data such as age, weight and
vital signs. It also had the capability to collect and consolidate textual information ;
comments of the health care professionals who interacted with the patients and
machinery such as X-rays and MRI scanners.
2. Decision Support Systems: Information system that analyze business data and
information that help in decision making process and problem solving processes
3. Knowledge Management System: Systems that adapt companies with new and
updated knowledge to keep up with the industry standard. These are implemented
by having KT (Knowledge Transfer ) sessions in a periodic manner.
i) PHS implemented a new data management platform which was called the " service
oriented architecture" . The IS unit of PHS provided a robust and integrated platform
for the collection , processing and dissemination of information across the PHS
network for the smooth functioning of their operations.
i) The PHS which is the integration of Partners HealthCare, Brigham and Women's
Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital adopted an information management
and technology architecture and platform .
ii) PHS added the CPOE (Computerized Patient Order Entry) system that kept
recorded prescriptions of patients and other physician assigned medical therapies.
iii) This helped in acting cooperatively and achieved coordination in their operations
and patient related data.
Q3. Explain how the information management at PHS as discussed in the case study
has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry.
Information System in healthcare industry will help the industry to gain advantage
over the competitive scenario and will help in reduction of cost.
