6. Study the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
Ideally graduation is supposed to usher one into paid ranks. Therefore it is not strange that more
than not many university students tend to fantasize about living large only to awaken to a harsh
reality after graduation.

According to the 2016 Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) report, titled, “labor market transition of
young people in Uganda, the national unemployment rate for people with tertiary level 05
qualifications currently stands at, 118%. As if that is not enough, 60% of the youths in paid
employment earn small salaries that can hardly take care of their needs.

Separately, another report during three years ago by the finance ministry indicated that each
passing year, 700,000 individuals are churned into the labor market.

This means that jobs are not only limited, but also the competition is very high. Life after campus is 10
a journey of contrasting tales. Whereas a few manage to land themselves jobs, a number of
graduates find them chasing shadows for long spells of time.

Twelve years back, she walked out of Makerere University with head high only to find the exterior
tough. With a second class upper degree in education, she like many others expected a soft landing.

“Imagine I had worked so hard at school and my family had spent a fortune on my education, but 15
upon graduating, there was no job”, she says. Akankwasa says after a long tiring search, she
managed to get a teaching job in one of the secondary schools around Luzira, a city suburb, only to
find the pay minimal and was not forthcoming at times.

“Initially they said since it was working on probation, they were to pay me sh. 100,000. Regardless
of my personal challenges, the employers Anet Akankwasa, a fabric trader in Kikubo talks of her 20
experience with unease.

Were also not paying me regularly but expected me to continue working untroubled, Akankwasa
narrates.

With a deep sigh of relief, the short and slender trained teacher confesses that had it not been for
her cousin’s intervention, she would probably still be jobless.

That aside, even those that have been given jobs struggle, to impress at time. 25

Enoch Lubwama a business development director of an on-line retail shop says many graduates
lack practical skills. He attributes this to the current teaching framework that puts more emphasis
on theoretical subjects. Some graduates come looking for a job yet they cannot even write an
application letter in formal English”. Lubwama says.

According to Lubwama, graduates need to work on their communication skills in order to win the 30
trust of prospective employers.

This view is shared by Philip Dhuluga Bam, the acting secretary general of Uganda Teachers’
Union. He says in case of panel interviews, the applicants should be in position to offer practical

solutions to problems. He says this, is one thing in particular that majority of employers are looking
for.

Work on your soft skills. 35

Peter Kibazo, the Uganda Management Institute public relations officer is one of one of those that
oppose the “no jobs narrative”.

According to him the jobs are in plenty, but it takes more than classroom knowledge to earn a call.

According to Kibazo, decent communication skills, sense of humor and ability to adapt quickly to
any situation is what employers are looking out for in every employee. He says graduates must 40
learn to present themselves whenever an opportunity comes calling. “How you present yourself is
what matters, not your academic qualification. Have something that differentiates you from the
majority’. Kibazo says, adding; discover what you are good at and where you need improvement”.

Research

Duruga advises graduates should use whatever resource is as available not only to research about 45
job offers, but also amass knowledge on a number on issues.

Patrick Ngorobe, the president of Uganda Human Resource Managers Association, says it is equally
important for a job seeker to know about emerging trends within their professions. Ngolobe says
there is nothing as distressing as an ignorant employee.

Upgrade academically. 50

Whereas the majority does it for the sake of securing a well-paying job, Duluga advises job seekers
to go for this option only for purposes of capacity building.

According to Burn, it should be ambition rather than desperation that should take one back to
school. Judging from his experience, he says those feeling that they should pursue a post graduate
should identify keenly a course that adds value to their academic field. “Do not things because 55
someone else has done them”. “Learn to follow your ambitions not money”, Buni advises.

School is also an opportunity for one to acquire skills that they could have missed at their previous
level.

Lubwama says the decision he took to undertake a computer course seven years ago has no
disappointment. This decision goes a long way in shaping the rough diamond in you. 60

Be resilient.
Unlike the lucky few who will easily walk into their dream job, the majority have to toil. As such it
is important that one learns not to give up.

Derrick Muhoozi an employee with a leading bank advises graduates to drop as many applications
to organizations as they can. 65

However, Ngolole advises that, as one waits for the big moment, they can request to volunteer in
case there are any openings. He says volunteers are usually the first to be considered in case of any
opening.
