CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
The industrial attachment is an essential of the curriculum at The Eldoret National polytechnic

and therefore there is no graduation without the industrial attachment. The industrial attachment

is usually a minimum of 8 weeks - maximum of twelve weeks, during which the student is

exposed to acquire additional practical experience to supplement the course of study in the

institution students are also exposed to the real work situation and its challenges which will

prepare them to work towards their future career. This report is the outcome of the attachment

period, practical training I had at Zoogam consulting engineers in Nairobi County

OBJECTIVE OF THE ATTCAHMENT

Some of the important objectives of the industrial attachment are as follows:

i. To assess the interest of the student in the occupation he/she plans to undertake

ii. To expose the students to work methods not taught in class and to provide access to

products equipment not normally available in the environment of the school.

iii. To provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge in real work situation

thereby closing the gap between school work and the actual practice.

iv. To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly and to enhance student

contacts for job placement.

v. To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in institutional activities and the entire

educational process of preparing the students for employment in industry

 Language barrier – some clients communicate in other languages that one cannot understand.

Despite the difficulties I encountered I was able to achieve success by gaining the required skills

from different departments I worked in. I conclude that Zoogam consulting engineers offered me

the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude expected of personnel in the building industry.
3.3 RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that

i. Staff members who are well conversant with specific languages be available whenever

language barrier occurs
