In this tale of 1960s tribalism, follow Harry (Zigger Zagger), a passionate fan of his local football team, torn between
the life of drink and violence which football hooliganism offers and the prospect of a stable future.
Each group will have the use of a single drum and up to 3 masks chosen from the Trestle mask box.
Task:
Working in larger groups, you are to present the opening of Zigger Zagger considering the elements
of Greek theatre.
One person should play Zigger and the others, the Chorus.
o (How can you demonstrate that you are at a football match and capture that passion and
excitement for the game? Which key skills will be required to work successfully in a large
group?)
o Ritual – think about the work we did with our interpretation of traditional rituals and
include ritualised movement as part of your football supporters crowd. You can include the
drum beat here.
o Masks - up to 3 people to make use of the masks during the performance. You should not
be masked throughout the section – choose when to put them on and how to use them to
add to the drama of the piece. CONSIDER THE RULES OF MASK USE CAREFULLY SO AS TO
MAKE THESE AS EFFECTIVE AS POSSIBLE.
Process:
1.) Read the piece through a couple of times and discuss your ideas for how to make use of chorus,
ritual and mask.
2.) Break the piece into smaller episodes and rehearse in turn.
3.) Refine your work – make sure it is well-rehearsed.
4.) Ensure everyone is engaged in the process.
5.) Be very familiar with the text so as to not be over reliant on the scripts
6.) Create staging that is appropriate to the task and rehearse with an awareness of audience when
staging your ideas.
7.) Present to the class and feedback on WWW/EBI re use of Greek Theatre techniques and the success
of the drama in engaging an audience.

ZIGGER ZAGGER
By Peter Terson
At a football match.
CROWD: Goal! (EG and TR look angry and upset in the crowd)
(Maya) ZIGGER: I am –
(Maya) ZIGGER: Leader of the football fans. Listen to them sing. Listen to them
spur the team on.
(Maya) ZIGGER: When our team comes out, they know I’m there. And I lead
the chorus. If their men play dirty then we go for them.
(They sing:)
You’re not singing, = maya izzy and a.b
you’re not singing,
you’re not singing anymore. = izzy and a.b
You’re not singing an-y-more.
CROWD: Oi oi oi.
CROWD: Oi.
CROWD: Oi.
CROWD: Oi oi oi.
(Maya) ZIGGER: Full time and we’ve made it. When that final whistle goes
and we’ve won. That’s triumph.
