8. Reading Different cultures
l

How much do you know about American culture?

Read the article below and find at least two things that are different in your country.

ifferent countries can have very different customs and culture. What is acceptable
in one country is sometimes considered inappropriate in another. When we visit other
countries, we have to learn as much as possible about their conventions, in order to feel
more comfortable when we interact with the local people. Of course, common sense helps
and we can’t go wrong if we are friendly, polite and respectful, but it is always useful to
find out a little about local customs.
Here are some tips that helped me when I first visited the United States:
l When you are introduced to someone just shake hands - kissing is reserved for family
and close friends.
l Always arrive on time for a business or social
appointment.
l If you can’t accept an invitation, give an
appropriate excuse and suggest another date
if possible. But when people suggest “some
other time” they are probably politely saying
they don’t want to go out, so don’t insist!
l When you go out with someone socially, always offer
to pay for your share of the expenses.
l When someone invites you to their home,
take something with you – chocolate,
wine or flowers are good gifts.
l Don’t forget to compliment the
host(ess) on their home and on the
food they serve.
l Send a thank-you note (e-mails are
appropriate) or call the next day to show
your appreciation.

Cultures may be similar or very different. But when you visit another country,
remember the old saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” And enjoy your trip!
