ABSTRACT

This report depicts my internship process at Hoang Dieu Foreign Language Center in
Thu Duc District, in particular I taught English to students from December 10, 2018 to
January 20, 2019. The report also shows experience and knowledge that I have learnt
from this center which is divided into two chapters.

Chapter 1 – INTERNSHIP CONTENT: This is about two main parts which are the
description of internship process and internship tasks. In the first part, it mentions the
general working process and my detailed working process at this center. Secondly, it
refers to the tasks that I was assigned to complete. Next, I show the ways and solutions
to carry out my duties at this enter.

Chapter 2 – INTERNSHIP SELF-EVALUATION AND REFLECTION: This is about


what lessons I got for myself and my suggestion for the center namely reflecting on
task management, staff relationship, regulations of enterprise, relationship between
theory and practice during the internship.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest thankfulness to all lecturers at Thu Duc
College of Technology who have transmitted ample and precious knowledge and
experience to me during the period of time studying at the College. In particular, the
most important person that I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to is
Mrs. Le Phuong Ngoc - my dedicated teacher who gave me useful guidance, advice as
well as supported me a lot to complete my internship report successfully.

I realized that this intenship course was a great time for me because it helped me gain
lots of experiences in improving my skills and I was able to apply what I learnt into
the enterprise. Furthermore, I was truly lucky when I had an opportunity to become an
employee of Hoang Dieu Foreign Language center and worked here.

Last but not least, I would like to express my heartfelt thank to manager of HDFLC -
Mrs. Bui Thi Thuan, especially my supervisor Mr. Pham Van Thach who has always
supported me enthusiastically and meticulously. I am also thankful to all staffs at
Hoang Dieu Foreign Language center who have assisted and supported in order to aid
me accomplish my tasks well.

CHAPTER 1: INTERNSHIP CONTENT

1.1 Description of internship process and internship tasks


 Introduction of Hoang Dieu Foreign Language Center

Hoang Dieu Foreign Language center was established on July 31, 2009 by Mrs. Tran
Thi My Chau – Director of this center. It is located at 124 Hoang Dieu Street, Linh
Chieu Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City. It has been running for 10 years and
recorded a lot of great achievement and rewards in teaching process. It provides
Starters, Movers, Flyers, TOEIC, IELTS and KET courses for all students.

 Internship process

My internship process took place from December 10, 2018 to January 20, 2019 at
Hoang Dieu Foreign Language Center in Thu Duc District. Like other organizations,
this center has five main departments with many different functions namely HR
Department, Department of Training, Accounting Department, Reception Department
and Teaching Department.

The following diagram is the general working process of the center:

Human Resources Department is responsible for setting up plans and strategies to


recruit new employees, train them except teachers and maintain human resources for
the center.

The mission of Department of Training is to make suggestions and help the Director in
orientation and development of training, especially organizing the implementation,
checking and supervising the entire teaching and studying progress of teachers and
students at this center.

Accounting Department is in charge of receiving students’ tuition fees, paying salary


to staffs, recording and reporting finance to manager as well as controlling finance of
the center.

Reception Department takes the responsibility for consulting parents’ enquiries about
information of English courses, answering incoming calls and recording students’
information of this center.

The duties of Teaching Department consist of training new teachers, supporting and
teaching children and preparing teaching program as well as tests.

In my internship time, I worked in Teaching Department at Hoang Dieu Foreign


Language Center as a teacher assistant, which was a very important job. All members
as well as I in this department had to compose teaching program for the center and
support teachers in tutoring students, provide more knowledge to good students, teach
some children classes, directly report students’ progress to my manager weekly. In the
role as a teacher assistant, I had to meet Head of Teaching Assistant in order to assume
the tasks, and then prepare lesson plans and games. Finally, I supported and taught
children with other teachers in class.

This is my detailed working process in Teaching Department at the Hoang Dieu

 Internship tasks

During my internship period at this center, my main tasks included supporting other
teachers in class, teaching a few children classes and tutoring students who followed
Starters, Movers and Flyers programs and had difficulties in their study and reported
their studying situation to my manager. In particular, I was assigned to prepare the
teaching lessons and exercises on computer, print the materials, study specific teaching
methods, especially teaching grammar and new vocabulary. Besides, I sometimes
answered the questions and wrote letter to students’ parents in order to clear up some
issues related to teaching and studying.

In addtion to accomplishing my duty, I also accumulated a lot of knowledge and
experience for myself. Firstly, I had an opportunity to review my English like
grammar, structure and learn more vocabulary via teaching. I also got other knowledge
that I have not studied at school as effective teaching methods (using humour pictures
and English songs, holding games to practise English, etc), ways of managing a class
and improving my computer skill. The important thing was that I realized my
weaknesses in grammar and pronunciation. Furthermore, it was extremely necessary to
widen the number of my English vocabulary before teaching. So as to complete any
tasks well, I had to make a clear and thorough plan and a clever strategy for myself.

My internship course lasted 6 weeks and I was mainly allotted to teach English to
students for 3 days a week including Monday, Thusday and Saturday from 4.00 PM to
6.30 PM.

In the first week, my supervisor guided me how to use the printer as well as photocopy
documents to prepare new lessons and teach Starters class. In particular, I reviewed
old lessons in “Family and Friends 1” book for them.

In the second week, my main tasks included tutoring children in new vocabulary in
Movers book, helping students to practise pronunciation, then preparing the test which
was about the past tense and remarking for them.

My duties in the next week were that tutoring some students following Starters and
Movers class in grammar structures, particularly I guided them to do exercises for the
future tense, typed and printed documents for students. After that, I aided them in
practising speaking skill and I also wrote some emails to inform children’s parents
about the studying progress of students

In the fourth week, my supervisor assigned me to teach students with other teachers in
class like reviewing old lessons, guiding Starters class how to pronounce some new
words, compiling the test for students and remarking this test.

My main missions in the fifth week were reviewing old lessons, teaching a new lesson.
In addition, I tutored students in vocabulary in Irregular Verb Table in Movers class,
then helped them enhance their speaking skill. In fact, I taught basic English
communation sentences to students and wrote some emails to their parents.

In my last week, my supervisor allotted me to compile the test for students, reviewed
some old words and sentences and taught some new words to them.

1.2 Task response analysis

In the tutoring task at this center, I had to test vocabulary or grammar in students’ old
lessons, and then I went on teaching new lessons in the book “Family and Friends” to
them. However, I sometimes did not know the meaning of some words, hence I looked
them up in my dictionary and Oxford. I also tutored and taught some kids in Movers
classes with other teachers as a teacher assistant, in particular, I listened to them to
understand the methods as well as observed what they did. Therefore, I would guide
students to do exercises if they did not understand. I had a conversation with my
manager at this center to report the progress of students who were in grade 3 to 9 via

taking notes, tests and their receptive ability. When preparing lessons or exercises, I
looked up new vocabulary in the Family and Friends books and found some exercises
in Google, then selected suitable content, copying them to my file. To consult with
parents or write emails, I applied all of my knowledge in English for Customer Care
and English for Business Correspondence subject. Consequently, I carried out these
tasks fast and effectively.

CHAPTER 2: INTERNSHIP SELF-EVALUATION AND REFLECTION

2.1 Reflecting on task management

During my internship period at this center, I got many missions; however, I also faced
many difficulties as well as disadvantages, but at the end, I still met deadlines on time.

About advantages, I was lucky to own knowledge of many subjects that I have learnt
at my college; especially, grammar, pronunciation, listening, reading, writing. These
subjects are really helpful in teaching skills to learners. Furthermore, at school I was
equipped the knowledge of Mircrosoft office in information technology subject so, I
know how to use computer and printer. Moreover, thanks to Business English and
English for Customer Care, I have some experiences in interacting with children. One
of the most advantages is I get support from my colleagues. In fact, they were willing
to help me in teaching me how to prepare a lesson plan or gave me useful advice when
I got into troubles with poor students in class.

On the contrary, I had some challenges namely lack of teaching skill and vocabulary,
short training time and disagreement among members of my team. Firstly, because my
major is Business English, I do not know some teaching skills such as how to compile
a lesson plan, how to solve argument between two learners in class, or how to manage
a noisy class, how to motivate learners when they are not good at English and so on.
Next, my vocabulary is not adequate because I do not accumulate more words during
the time I studied at college. Finally, although I was equipped with communication
skill and team work skill at school, we had some disagreements among team members.
This led to the argument and the result was our team’s tasks were not solved well.

In conclusion, although I met many prolems in my teaching, I always tried my best to
complete all tasks that supervisor assigned me well. Thanks to some knowledge of
many subjects studying, accumulating at my college and support from my super visor
and other colleagues in the workplace and I aslo had a part-time job before, I found it
easy to solve troubles happening in the internship process. Besides, before teaching in
class, I previously viewed and searched for vocabulary, grammar structures related to
the lesson in google, then I brought documents to teach. In addition, I could learn how
to use the printer as well as the computer at my center and I was able to improve my
communication and confidence skills during the internship process.

In my opinion, six weeks of my internship course are not long enough for me to get
more experience and skills in a new working environment. Furthermore, I would take
the responsibility for tutoring more students with various levels of English. Besides, it
would be better if I received more missions such as documents, photocopying and
playing games as an English teacher in classes.

2.2 Reflecting on staff relationship

During my internship time, I always tried to maintain and develop relationships in the
center. In fact, I have had good relationships with my supervisor – Mr. Pham Van
Thach and some employees thanks to my communication skill and negotiation skill
from my study at college. I always interacted with them politely and respectfully,
which might creates a good impression. Naturally, when I had any relationships, I also
had both benefits and drawbacks such as creating a lot of good ideas, receiving large
of support and suggestion, improving team-work skill, practising some soft skills like
communication skill, negotiation skill more, but disagreement among the members of
team was a challenge for my relationships.

2.3 Reflecting on the regulations of the enterprise

2.3.1 Regulations on working, studying, resting, and labor safety rules

There were a lot of precious things I learnt from the internship at Hoang Dieu Foreign
Language Center. Firstly, I almostly took working style like coming to workplace on
time, accomplishing right my responsibilities and tasks, being active, devoted and
honest in work, using cellphone with right purposes, wearing clear and polite

costumes. Next, I could ask permission about 2 days in advance if I wanted to take a
leave. I had 4 day offs per month. I also felt that manner in industry was extremely
important because that showed beauty, culture and especially the rules in any
businesses; hence, if I lacked the knowledge which meant that I easily broke the
regulations, I could not continue working.

2.3.2 Regulations on fire prevention and fighting, hygiene, and environment

The regulations of fire protection which I learnt at the center played a vital role for
safety of the whole center namely teachers, students, and others. It was obvious that
fire prevention and fighting was an obligation of every citizen and I was not an
exception. Furthermore, I also learned how to save myself and other people from fire
and some ways to get fire under control such as using fire extinguisher, sand, wet
towel. If I was not equipped with the solid knowledge, I could not work in any
businesses for a long time and many menaces could come any time. Besides, I strongly
believed that the Environment Protection Regulation helped me as well as all staffs in
this center to enhance the awareness of keeping public environment clean.

2.4 Reflecting on the relationship of theory and practice

I could finish my internship course as well as completed tasks well thanks to the
subjects that I studied at my college like Grammar, Pronunciation, English for
Customer Care and English for Business Correspondence. I absolutely used the
knowledge to teach basic grammar, tutor vocabulary, write emails during my
internship period. Nevertheless, I got some difficulties in managing classes with
mischievous students, thus I thought it was very important for me to study Psychology
to understand children’s thought, join teaching training course to improve teaching
skill. I also felt satisfied with my result in my internship at this center such as using
computer and printer expertly, absorbing more vocabulary and grammar structures,
getting experience for my future job, creating new relationships, helping students take
in knowledge easily. In the internship time, there were many problems in managing
classes. What is more, there was some vocabulary in “Family and Friends 5” book that
I could not pronounce well. In addition, I had to control my feeling when I taught
many naughty students.

Thanks to this internship at this center, I could enhance my teaching skill,
communication skill, IT skill, analysis skill via practising teaching in class, interacting
with other teachers and students a lot, preparing documents and teaching programs on
computer, focusing on students’ weaknesses to have appropriate methods.
Nonetheless, it was necessary to equip myself with independence skill and creativity
skill because I still used old ways and depended on my supervisor in teaching process.

CONCLUSION

Internship is a very helpful module for students before graduating and working. It not
only brings me a chance to experience in the real working environment, but also helps
students realize their weaknesses and strengths as well as improve themselves to be
better for other future jobs. Besides, I would be pleased to learn more knowledge and
experience like teaching methods, management skill, courteous behavior and methods
from predecessors, especially my supervisor, managers and others at Hoang Dieu
Foreign Language Center during the internship period.

The time of internship was quite short and I have not had much experience through my
internship, hence my internship report can have mistakes in some places. I look
forward to receiving worth feedbacks and advice from teachers to complete my report
fully.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratefulness to my instructor, all lecturers


and friends in Thu Duc College of Technology, supervisor and all colleagues in Hoang
Dieu Foreign Language Center who have always supported me to complete chapters in
my internship report.
